Her comments, reported in August 2023, were an expression of interest—not an announcement that The Help 2 is in production. The reports do not confirm a sequel, release date, or Octavia Spencer’s involvement.
What did Jessica Chastain say about The Help 2?
In an Entertainment Weekly Awardist podcast appearance recorded before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Chastain spoke about wanting to revisit Celia Foote, the character she played in the 2011 film. Entertainment Tonight reported on August 15, 2023, that Chastain said, “You know who I think about all the time, and I just wish I could play her [again]? Celia Foote.”

She proposed a story focused on Celia and Minny: “I just want to do something, Celia and Minny, and see what happened.” Chastain pictured them living together and raising the baby together, and described them as best friends. She also said she loved playing Celia and had been able to be “a bit silly” in the role.
Chastain’s interest was personal and creative, not a commitment to reprise the part. She explained that Celia was a supporting role and that she “didn’t really get to mine that much material.” Entertainment Weekly also reported her comments from the Awardist appearance.

Does The Help have a sequel?
The cited reports establish no announced or confirmed sequel, production schedule, or release date. They report Chastain’s wish and an imagined premise; that is not evidence that a film has been greenlit. The reports also do not establish that Octavia Spencer has agreed to return as Minny.
So, “The Help 2” describes a sequel idea discussed by Chastain, not a confirmed film. Her imagined version would follow Celia and Minny after the original story, but the proposed living arrangement and baby-raising storyline should not be treated as an official plot.

Who are Celia and Minny in the original film?
The Help (2011) stars Chastain as Celia Foote and Spencer as Minerva “Minny” Jackson, alongside Viola Davis and Emma Stone. In the film, Celia is a housewife who bonds with Minny after suffering miscarriages and facing condemnation from her husband. Chastain’s sequel idea shifts attention toward the relationship between Celia and Minny rather than confirming a continuation of the original ensemble’s story.

The sequel conversation also sits alongside criticism of the original film’s perspective. As reported by Entertainment Tonight, Viola Davis later expressed regret about participating, saying, “There’s a part of me that feels like I betrayed myself, and my people, because I was in a movie that wasn’t ready to [tell the whole truth].” Davis also said the movie was “catering to the white audience.” Those are Davis’s views, not a claim of universal critical consensus.

- When two business colleagues become stranded on a deserted island as the only survivors of a plane crash, they must overcome past grievances and work together to stay alive. But they’re not in the office anymore, and an unsettling, wryly humorous battle of wills and wits begins in this original, darkly comedic psychological thriller.
That criticism matters to any discussion of a possible continuation because the central question is not only whether familiar characters return, but whose experience and point of view the story would center. Chastain’s reported idea focuses on Celia and Minny; the reports do not describe a developed screenplay or address how a sequel would respond to Davis’s concerns.
