The ‘Heated Rivalry’ Fandom Is Tearing Itself Apart—But Not All Fans

Online conflict around Heated Rivalry involves privacy speculation, hateful abuse and representation debates. The reporting documents incidents, not a fandom-wide fracture.

Online fights around Heated Rivalry are real, but the available reporting does not show that the audience as a whole is divided or toxic. The flashpoints include invasive speculation about performers’ private lives, racist and other hateful abuse, arguments over queer representation, and backlash between fans and critics. Those are distinct problems—and loud social-media conflicts are not a measure of how most viewers behave.

What the fandom conflict is actually about

Heated Rivalry, adapted from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books, centers on hockey rivals Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov and their romance. The show’s popularity has brought close attention to its cast and creative team, but the disputes described in coverage are not one single argument. They involve different people, platforms, and kinds of conduct.

  • Private-life speculation: Some fans track cast appearances and career news, while speculation about Hudson Williams and François Arnaud has crossed into scrutiny of their personal lives. WIRED reported in February 2026 that the actors had not confirmed or denied a relationship at that time; speculation should not be treated as fact. Nor does an actor’s role establish anything about their own sexuality.
  • Harassment and hateful comments: WIRED reported that Williams was targeted with anti-Asian slurs and queer-baiting accusations, and that Arnaud faced online abuse amid relationship speculation. Criticism of a performance or public statement is not the same thing as racist abuse, invasive speculation, or a pile-on.
  • Disputes over criticism and representation: Coverage of the show’s sex scenes, its fans, and questions about fetishization prompted backlash. The Independent’s January 2026 article offered a pointed interpretation of the fandom’s effect on the show; that is commentary, not proof that every fan or critic shares the conduct it describes.

In a WIRED interview, Reid said she had not expected the book to be analyzed “like The Great Gatsby” and described it as “really just a hockey romance.” She also emphasized listening to feedback from the community a writer is trying to represent. That helps explain why representation debates can feel consequential to readers and viewers, but disagreement about the work does not by itself amount to harassment.

Why the arguments can feel so consuming

For some viewers, the emotional investment is part of the experience. WIRED quoted a Reddit thread asking, “Anyone else get way too emotionally affected by this show?” That is one person’s prompt in one thread, not a survey of the audience. It illustrates a reaction, not how common that reaction is.

WIRED’s February report described fan accounts following cast appearances and career developments. Operators of one update account said they considered whether posting event photos could expose Arnaud to hateful replies and described avoiding paparazzi photos taken without consent. The episode shows how a seemingly ordinary fan activity—sharing a picture—can raise questions about privacy and the consequences of amplification.

Creator Jacob Tierney, speaking on the Loon Call podcast as quoted by WIRED, rejected demands that he take sides in online fights. He called out a “segment of the fandom” making “horrible things” about his actors and characters, then said, “I’m not participating. I’m not paying attention.” His remarks address the toxic behavior he described; they do not characterize every fan.

How platform culture shapes the experience

In March 2026, WIRED reported that some fans were returning to Tumblr or moving toward Threads. Interviewees described Tumblr as having a stronger sense of community and contrasted it with more reactionary exchanges on X. These are reported experiences, not a verdict on every conversation or user on any platform.

Platform, behavior, and speaker all matter when assessing a dispute. A disagreement over a review is different from a coordinated pile-on; a fan’s account of a platform is different from a journalist’s interpretation or an actor’s public response. Treating every argument as proof that a whole platform or fandom is uniformly hostile obscures those distinctions.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—show

The reporting documents incidents and perspectives, but it does not establish what share of the audience participates in harassment, supports a particular side, or even uses the platforms discussed. The loudest accounts are visible; they are not a representative sample of all viewers.

One number in the coverage should not be mistaken for a measure of fandom conflict. WIRED attributed to Crave a figure that 15 percent of people who had rewatched had seen an episode five or more times. The article does not state the year for that figure, and it concerns repeat viewing within the described rewatch group—not audience size, harassment, or how representative any online faction is.

How to follow the discussion without mistaking a pile-on for consensus

  • Separate criticism from abuse. Negative commentary about a show is not automatically harassment; slurs, targeted abuse, and invasive attention to private life are different behaviors.
  • Check what is confirmed. Do not turn speculation about performers’ relationships, sexuality, or motives into biographical fact.
  • Notice who is speaking. A fan, actor, creator, journalist, and critic have different perspectives and stakes. Attribute an opinion to its speaker rather than presenting it as a finding about the entire audience.
  • Read platform accounts as accounts. Someone’s experience on X, Tumblr, or Threads can be meaningful without describing everyone there.
  • Use the source material as context, not ammunition. Reid’s novels offer one route into the story; reading them is optional and will not resolve every disagreement about the adaptation or its fandom.

For a fuller account of the incidents and viewpoints, see WIRED’s February report, its March coverage of fandom discourse, The Independent’s opinionated account, and WIRED’s interview with Rachel Reid. CinemaBlend also reported on a joint post from Williams and Arnaud calling out hateful fan conduct.
