A dark, faceless figure in a wide-brimmed hat has become a familiar character in online horror stories. The Hat Man is best understood as a modern folklore figure—not a medical diagnosis or a verified supernatural being. Some accounts resemble experiences reported during sleep paralysis, but that does not explain every story or prove what any individual experienced.
Who is the Hat Man?
“Hat Man” is the name given to a recurring shadow-person motif: a dark, often faceless figure, commonly described as tall and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Details vary. In one account recorded by the USC Digital Folklore Archives, an informant described a tall, faceless figure in a trenchcoat and wide-brimmed hat standing in the room during recurring sleep-paralysis episodes. That entry documents one person’s account, not how common such experiences are.
The figure belongs to contemporary folklore: people share and adapt stories about it, including online. PBS’s Monstrum traces internet circulation to the late 2000s and says the stories later gained traction on TikTok. TikTok references can be frightening or humorous, as The Week reported in 2025. The available sources do not provide view counts or other measurements that would establish the Hat Man as TikTok’s single most popular horror villain; “new favorite” is a framing, not a verified ranking.
Why do people see the Hat Man?
One relevant context is sleep paralysis. The NHS describes it as a temporary inability to move or speak that can happen while falling asleep or waking. Such episodes can be frightening, and accounts of a figure in the room are discussed alongside sleep paralysis in PBS’s Monstrum. This makes sleep paralysis a credible context for some reports, not a proven cause of every Hat Man story.

Personal experience and shared stories may also influence one another. The USC archive’s informant had encountered Hat Man accounts online before and after the first episode. The archive raises, rather than settles, whether similarities between accounts arise from a natural sleep-related phenomenon, the circulation of stories, or both. An individual account cannot establish which explanation applies to anyone else.
Is the Hat Man a sleep paralysis demon?
“Sleep paralysis demon” is a popular label for a frightening presence perceived around sleep; it is not a diagnosis or proof of a supernatural entity. The same reported figure can be discussed in different ways without treating those explanations as interchangeable:

| Perspective | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep-paralysis account | A sleep-wake experience involving temporary inability to move or speak, sometimes accompanied by frightening perceptions. | It does not diagnose a particular person or show that every Hat Man report has the same cause. |
| Folklore and internet stories | A figure whose description is shared, retold, and adapted. | Circulation of a story does not prove a single origin or a supernatural explanation. |
| Supernatural interpretation | A belief that an encounter involves an entity beyond ordinary sleep experience. | A belief is not evidence that such an entity exists. |
PBS notes that cultures interpret related nighttime experiences through their own figures and beliefs. That does not make the Hat Man identical to culturally specific figures such as the Old Hag, Pisadeira, or Kanashibari; they are distinct traditions that may be discussed in relation to sleep-related experiences.
What does Benadryl have to do with the Hat Man?
Online lore sometimes claims that the Hat Man appears after someone takes too much Benadryl. That claim is not a safe explanation to test. Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine used for allergy and cold symptoms—not a way to seek a Hat Man experience.

The FDA also cited reports of teenagers needing emergency care or dying after the TikTok “Benadryl Challenge.” Do not take extra doses or participate in such a challenge. Sources document a recognizable modern folklore motif, its online circulation before TikTok, and some accounts reported alongside sleep paralysis. They do not establish a supernatural being, a single cause for all reports, or a platform-wide popularity ranking. The legend sits where frightening sleep experiences and shared storytelling can meet, while leaving the meaning of any individual account open.
