Spoilers for “Exodus,” Season 6, Episode 8. June kills Commander Bell during the rebellion at Serena’s wedding. The act gives Bell’s violence a personal consequence, but the choice not to make Janine his killer matters just as much: actor Madeline Brewer said that would not have felt true to Janine. Meanwhile, Aunt Lydia’s shift is a recognition that Gilead has betrayed the ideals she tried to serve—not a clean redemption.
What happens at the end of “Exodus”?
Hulu identifies “Exodus” as Season 6, Episode 8, released May 13, 2025. It is not the season finale; Season 6 has ten episodes. The official logline frames the episode around June and Moira carrying out a dangerous plan and Serena making a major commitment. (Hulu Press)
As the Handmaids’ rebellion unfolds around Serena’s wedding, June kills Commander Bell by stabbing him in the eye. TheWrap’s episode-specific account says Bell had been sedated after eating Serena’s wedding cake and had received a call about the rebellion before June attacked him. (TheWrap)
The moment connects the wider uprising to the people Gilead has personally harmed. June’s action is retaliation against Bell, and it also ends his control over Janine. That reading is an interpretation of the scene; the show’s creator and Brewer separately explained the writing and character choices behind Bell’s death.

Why does June kill Commander Bell?
June’s killing of Bell turns the rebellion into a personal reckoning. The uprising is not only a plan to challenge Gilead as a system; it also gives June an opportunity to act against a man whose violence has shaped Janine’s life. The scene makes that justice immediate and physical rather than symbolic.
Series creator Bruce Miller told TheWrap that the writers considered several possible ways for Bell to die, including a version in which multiple people took part. He said the characters at this point were focused on surviving and escaping, and described June’s action as satisfying. That explains the dramatic choice without making it a claim that June’s act resolves the broader struggle.

Why doesn’t Janine kill Bell?
Janine is not the one who kills Bell. Brewer, who plays her, said having Janine do it would have changed the character: “I felt that they acknowledged Janine’s spirit by not having her be the one to kill him, because that’s not Janine.” (TheWrap)
That choice leaves Janine’s response to Gilead distinct from June’s. June can deliver the act of retaliation without requiring Janine to become a killer in order for the story to grant her release from Bell’s control. Miller’s comments show that the writers considered alternatives; Brewer’s comments clarify why this particular alternative would have felt wrong to her character.

What does Serena’s commitment mean?
Hulu’s episode logline says Serena makes “a big commitment,” while the episode listing describes it as a decision affecting her future. The episode’s wedding and rebellion place that choice beside the resistance’s growing challenge to Gilead, but the commitment should not be read as proof that Serena has rejected the regime.
The season synopsis describes Serena as trying to reform Gilead. That creates a tension between her ambitions and the oppression built into the system she is trying to change: a consequential commitment can shape her future without amounting to a break with Gilead. (Hulu Press)

What changes for Aunt Lydia?
Lydia’s turn is a reluctant recognition that the system she tried to work within has betrayed its own purported ideals. In episode-related coverage, Miller put it this way: “She didn’t leave Gilead so much as Gilead left her.” (Los Angeles Times)
The distinction matters. Lydia’s understanding and allegiance are changing, but that does not erase the harm she helped inflict or amount to full absolution. Her shift is better understood as the collapse of her belief that Gilead lives up to its ideals.

How “Exodus” shifts the season’s conflict
Hulu’s season synopsis describes June’s determination drawing her back into the fight to take down Gilead, with Luke and Moira joining the resistance. Against that larger frame, the coordinated rebellion in “Exodus” marks a move from individual survival toward organized resistance. June’s killing of Bell is one personal consequence within that wider fight, not the end of it.
For viewers interested in the story’s source, Hulu identifies Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale as the source material. That does not mean the episode’s specific plot resolution appears in the book. (Hulu Press)
