Spoilers for the series finale. June survives, Boston’s resistance wins a major battle, and Serena leaves for a refugee camp with her baby. But June does not find Hannah, and Gilead’s wider conflict remains unresolved. In the closing scene, June returns to the former Waterford home and begins recording her story—a circular, quietly hopeful ending that does not pretend the fight is over.
What happens in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ finale?
The sixth-season finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” premiered on May 27, 2025. Bruce Miller wrote the episode, and Elisabeth Moss directed it, according to Hulu Press.
It opens with the commanders’ plane exploding. Boston is liberated, giving the resistance a major victory. The episode does not show Gilead falling everywhere, though: the battle in Boston is one part of a conflict that continues beyond the city.
What happens to June?
June survives, but she does not get the reunion she wants. Her mother and Luke encourage her to put her experiences into words. She returns to the former Waterford home, where she once lived as Offred, and begins recording her story.

The final moments echo the series premiere: June’s closing dialogue repeats language from the opening, and she looks toward the camera before the screen cuts to black. The series began with June’s story and ends with her choosing to tell it.
Does June find Hannah?
No. Hannah remains in Gilead, and June does not reunite with her in the finale. The separation leaves one of the series’ central emotional stories unresolved.

What does the last scene mean?
June’s recording turns the ending into a beginning: it suggests that she is starting to tell the story that connects to Margaret Atwood’s source novel. Hulu describes the television series as adapted from Atwood’s novel and identifies Bruce Miller as its creator (Hulu Press).

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Moss described the circular structure this way: “I love the idea that at the end is when she starts to tell the story that is the book, and the circular nature of that gives me chills.” She also said, “You’re telling this one woman’s story. … It’s always been ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ her story.” Those are Moss’s reflections on the adaptation’s perspective, not a promise that June’s story—or the political struggle—is resolved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the ending happy?
That depends on which part of June’s story you weigh most. She survives, begins to reclaim her voice, and sees Boston win an important battle. At the same time, Hannah is still in Gilead and the wider conflict is unfinished. “Heartfelt” is a fair reading of the finale’s return to June’s act of storytelling; “complete victory” is not.
