Episode 10 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is the series finale. Mayday liberates Massachusetts and frees the handmaids, but Gilead remains in power elsewhere. June does not reunite with Hannah; instead, she begins recording her experience, while she and Luke part over how to continue the fight.
What happens in The Handmaid’s Tale series finale?
Mayday launches an operation that frees the handmaids and kills most of Gilead’s high commanders. Massachusetts is liberated, but the victory does not topple the regime across the country. Gilead still rules much of America, and the rebellion continues. Hulu’s Season 6 guide describes the episode as a breakthrough in the resistance, not the end of the conflict.
The finale also brings several characters to new circumstances outside Gilead’s command structure. Janine is free and reunites with her daughter, Charlotte, in liberated Massachusetts, with help from Aunt Lydia and Naomi. Serena and her son Noah are living in a refugee camp; Serena no longer has the status she held as a commander’s wife and is focused on her child.
Do June and Hannah reunite?
No. Hannah remains in Gilead, and June does not reach her in the finale. June’s effort to free her daughter—the personal goal that has driven much of her struggle—remains unresolved. The episode leaves their reunion as a future possibility rather than presenting it as a completed rescue.

Do June and Luke stay together?
June and Luke separate because they disagree about what the resistance should do next. June wants to focus on freeing the girls still trapped in Gilead; Luke favors guerrilla tactics. Hulu describes their parting as amicable: they promise to meet again and keep working to find and free Hannah. Their relationship changes, but their shared commitment to her does not disappear.
Does June go back to Gilead?
After the operation, June returns to the former Waterford home and begins writing a book about what she has lived through. The finale does not show her reuniting with Hannah or resolving the larger struggle by returning to Gilead. Her act of writing turns her experience back into testimony, while the ongoing resistance leaves open what she may do next.

Does the rebellion end?
No. Mayday’s success frees the handmaids and liberates Massachusetts, but Gilead still controls much of America. The high commanders killed in the operation are a severe blow to the regime, not proof that it has fallen. The political ending is deliberately incomplete: the episode closes June’s immediate chapter with a return to testimony, while the fight for the people still under Gilead’s rule continues.
What does the ending mean for the series?
The finale ends the series without resolving every central conflict. June’s story comes back to the act of bearing witness; her partnership with Luke gives way to separate strategies; and Hannah remains beyond their reach. Those outcomes make the finale a character and thematic conclusion rather than a complete political resolution. Hulu’s press description frames the final chapter around “the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom,” a theme reflected in a victory that matters without ending the struggle.
