Green literature for Indian children is becoming more visible and varied, with books ranging from wildlife photography and picture-book storytelling to climate fiction and illustrated nonfiction. Editors have reported finding over 40 new English-language releases in 2024, but that count is limited in scope: it is not a measure of the whole Indian market, sales or regional-language publishing.
What counts as green literature for children?
It is a broad category rather than a single genre. It includes nature and wildlife writing, conservation, biodiversity, climate change, sustainability, pollution, environmental history and stories about how people live with ecosystems. Place-rooted folklore and speculative fiction about environmental futures can belong here too.
Books take many forms: board and picture books, comics and graphic narratives, illustrated nonfiction, biographies, middle-grade novels and fiction imagining possible futures. That breadth matters: a child may meet environmental ideas through a story, photographs, a scientist’s life or a book about a particular landscape.
What the recent growth evidence does—and does not—show
Azim Premji University’s Nature Writing for Children editors describe an expanding, increasingly diverse stream of books. When the newsletter began in 2024, they wondered whether there would be enough Indian environmental children’s literature for a monthly edition; their subsequent round-ups reflect an editorial survey, not a national census. Their 2025 round-up documents varied approaches and examples.

Meghaa Gupta told Mongabay India that the editors began with 32–33 titles in 2020 and identified over 40 new releases in 2024. Mongabay specifies that the count covers English-language children’s publishers in India and excludes regional-language literature. It is a reported count of titles located within that scope—not a complete bibliography, market-size estimate, sales figure or measure of year-on-year sales growth. Mongabay’s report provides the context.
No comprehensive figure is established for green children’s books’ share of Indian publishing, sales, revenue, readership or annual sales growth. The most defensible sense of a “bloom” is qualitative: more visible examples, a wider range of forms and subjects, and contributions from both specialist and general publishers.

How the books are changing
Wildlife through photographs and observation
Photo-led books let children encounter animals and habitats visually. The 2025 round-up highlights Wild About India, a ten-book wildlife series from Indian Pitta Kids/Juggernaut, as one example of this approach. A photograph-centered format can invite close attention to species and their environments, while the series structure offers multiple entry points into Indian wildlife.
Graphic storytelling and picture books
Illustration and comics make room for environmental ideas within narrative. The round-up discusses graphic storytelling across fiction and picture books, with titles including Song of the Asunam, An Absence of Squirrels, The Pangolin Protectors, River or a String of Clouds?, The Whispering Mountains and Our Potpourri Planet. These examples show that the field is not limited to fact-led wildlife guides.

Climate, futures and politics
Some children’s books use speculative futures to connect environmental harm with political realities. This can place climate and ecological change within questions of power, community and choice, rather than treating nature as separate from human life. The university’s round-up identifies this as one of the approaches appearing in recent work.
Attention to the book as an object
The same round-up notes attention to production quality. Visual design, image selection and the physical experience of a book can shape how young readers engage with a subject, particularly in illustrated nonfiction and picture books.

Which publishers and discovery routes are contributing?
The field includes specialist environmental publishers as well as broader children’s imprints. Azim Premji University’s 2024 round-up names Kalpavriksh and TERI Press, alongside environmental children’s titles from Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Tulika, Karadi Tales, Tara, Speaking Tiger and Pratham Books. It also notes Indian Pitta and Niyogi Books’ Perky Parrot entering the area. These are documented examples, not a complete directory. The 2024 round-up offers further context.
Publisher catalogues can help families compare specific books, though listings and availability may change. Penguin Random House India’s children’s catalogue includes nature-related titles such as Down by the Mangroves, about the Sundarbans and climate change; Catching the Sun and Wind, a biography of weather scientist Anna Mani; The Great Indian Safari; and Soul Forest. Some catalogue entries provide age guidance that may help readers choose a suitable level.

Nature reading also reaches children through educational collaborations. Nature Conservation Foundation describes a Navneet notebook project featuring 12 Indian birds, with bird information, illustrations and games. NCF reports that more than five lakh books were available online and through stationery stores across multiple Indian states. That is a project distribution figure, not a sales total for environmental books or evidence of the genre’s market size. NCF’s nature education page describes the project.
For multilingual digital discovery, NCF points readers to StoryWeaver by Pratham Books, which it describes as a source of thousands of illustrated, open-licensed children’s stories in many languages. Its nature examples include Our Encounter with a Snow Leopard and Birds That Sing Their Name. This is a useful route to stories in multiple languages, but it does not establish how many regional-language green books are published in India. NCF’s page includes the StoryWeaver reference.
How to choose a book for a child
Rather than treating “green books” as one reading level or subject, start with the child’s interests and the kind of reading experience they enjoy. Compare a few practical features before choosing:
- Reading level: Check the publisher’s stated age guidance when available, then consider the child’s reading confidence and interest in the subject.
- Story or information: Decide whether the child is more likely to engage with fiction, a biography, a photo-led wildlife book or illustrated nonfiction.
- Subject: Narrow the choice to wildlife, climate, conservation, ecology, environmental history or another topic the child already wonders about.
- Format: Photographs, picture books, graphic narratives and longer novels offer different ways into the material.
- Place and language: Look for Indian ecological contexts that feel relevant, and check the edition and language available to your family.
These criteria help match a book to a reader; they are not a ranking of literary quality or proof of a particular educational impact.

Why the change is worth noticing
The encouraging development is not a verified market boom but a widening set of ways for children to encounter the natural world and environmental questions. Wildlife, climate, biodiversity and human relationships with place are appearing across formats and publishers, while educational projects and open-licensed stories extend discovery beyond conventional book catalogues. The reported English-language release count offers one limited sign of activity; it cannot stand in for the full multilingual landscape.
