Ron Howard’s 2000 live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas remains a brash, candy-colored Christmas comedy built around Jim Carrey’s full-throttle performance. Its 25th Anniversary edition adds a 4K remaster with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, plus more than 30 minutes of new bonus content. The upgrade gives the film a timely home-video celebration; it does not settle the question of whether its manic style is delightful or simply too much.
What is the 25th Anniversary Grinch edition?
This is the 2000 live-action film directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carrey—not the 1966 animated television special or the 2018 animated feature. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced the anniversary release on September 23, 2025, with a street date of November 11, 2025. The distributor describes it as a new 4K remaster featuring Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, not a newly edited or extended version of the movie. Its official title page lists the anniversary package as 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital. Universal’s title page has the format information; its release announcement gives the remaster and extras details.
The film’s technical runtime on the anniversary disc is 1:44:54, according to Universal; its general title page rounds that to 1 hour 45 minutes. Universal rates it PG for some crude humor. The cast includes Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, Bill Irwin, Taylor Momsen, and others, with Anthony Hopkins narrating.
Does Jim Carrey’s Grinch still work?
Carrey is the movie’s engine. His Grinch is all twitching motion, contorted expression, and elaborately timed insults, a performance that turns the character’s irritation with Whoville into a comic spectacle. The heavy makeup is part of the feat: the role’s physical transformation does not mute Carrey so much as give his elastic performance a larger, stranger canvas.
#1 Best Overall
That energy has an equally extravagant setting. Whoville is oversized, brightly colored, and crowded with ornament, while its residents treat Christmas as a shopping-and-display competition. The film’s consumerist satire is not subtle, but the excess makes the point legible: a town obsessed with gifts and spectacle gives the Grinch plenty to hate—and eventually reveals that its people can value more than the things they buy.
Cindy Lou Who, played by Momsen, supplies a warm emotional counterweight. The expanded backstory gives both her and the Grinch more context than the compact animated special could, helping the story’s movement from alienation to connection feel earned within this version. The film’s mixture of camp, frantic comedy, and darker feeling is unusual; when the pieces align, the heart of the story survives the noise.

Why do viewers remain divided?
The same intensity that makes the film distinctive can crowd out its simpler emotional core. Meta jokes, rapid-fire gags, and tonal shifts compete for attention, and some scenes feel more interested in keeping the spectacle moving than letting a feeling land. Viewers who prefer the restrained charm of the 1966 special may find Howard’s adaptation overstuffed rather than richer.
That split shows up in Rotten Tomatoes’ changing page snapshot, accessed in 2026: 50% on the Tomatometer from 146 critic reviews and 60% on the Popcornmeter from more than 250,000 audience ratings. The site’s displayed critics consensus praises Carrey while judging the film unsuccessful overall. These figures are a dated snapshot, not a permanent verdict. A 2023 Rotten Tomatoes retrospective makes the affirmative case for the expanded character histories, production design, and Carrey’s committed performance, while acknowledging objections to the tonal inconsistency and overfull style.

What is new in the anniversary bonus content?
Universal says the release adds over 30 minutes of new bonus content. The centerpiece, “25 Years Later: The Gift of THE GRINCH,” features Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer, makeup artist Rick Baker, and Taylor Momsen discussing the film’s making and legacy. The announced extras also include deleted scenes, outtakes, “Who School,” makeup design, set decoration, visual effects, a Faith Hill music video, the theatrical trailer, and Ron Howard’s feature commentary. These are additions for fans interested in how the film’s unusually elaborate look and performance were made, not changes to the movie itself.
Is the 4K edition worth choosing?
The anniversary set is the clearest choice for viewers who want this film in 4K and value the new retrospective and other extras. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are listed by Universal as features of the remaster; whether they produce a noticeable improvement depends on the disc presentation, playback equipment, and viewing conditions. The available specifications do not establish a measured picture or sound improvement over earlier releases.

Universal also lists the film in other Blu-ray, DVD, digital, and collection formats, so the anniversary 4K package is not the only way to watch it. If your display or sound system does not support the relevant 4K HDR or Atmos features, compare the included formats and bonus material before choosing. Streaming, rental, and purchase availability varies by territory and date; check current local listings before planning a watch.

“Perfect Christmas classic” is a matter of taste, not a settled critical consensus. But the phrase fits the film’s particular appeal: Carrey’s gleeful physical performance, the lavish Whoville design, and the story’s pushback against Christmas reduced to shopping. Its tonal overload is real, yet for viewers who enjoy holiday comedy at maximum volume, the 25th Anniversary edition gives that unruly spectacle a welcome new home-video release and a substantial set of making-of extras.
