The Greatest Night in Pop is a 2024 Netflix documentary about the January 28, 1985, recording of “We Are the World.” Its freshest details come from recovered session footage and audio alongside later interviews: Prince did not show up for a planned solo, Huey Lewis took the line, Cyndi Lauper’s jewelry reportedly disrupted recording, and the all-star session was more fraught—and more tiring—than the finished song suggests. Those stories are not all the same kind of evidence: some appear in archival material, while others are participants’ memories.

What is The Greatest Night in Pop about?

Directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Julia Nottingham, the film revisits the Los Angeles session where dozens of performers recorded “We Are the World” after the American Music Awards, hosted that night by Lionel Richie. Richie and Michael Jackson wrote the song, and Quincy Jones produced the recording. Netflix describes the documentary as a look at the gathering behind the charity single. Netflix Media Center

The film’s added context comes partly from material outside the official music video. Four cameras recorded the session, and audio journalist David Breskin also captured sound. TIME reports that Nguyen and editor Nic Zimmermann synchronized some of Breskin’s dictaphone recordings with footage that had been missing audio, restoring exchanges and atmosphere the music video does not convey. TIME’s account of the documentary

Why did so many stars record the song in one night?

The film and coverage connect the project to activist Harry Belafonte’s call for prominent Black artists to take part in famine relief in Africa. The British and Irish charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” had recently demonstrated the potential of bringing well-known performers together for a cause. Belafonte worked with entertainment figures including Ken Kragen and Jones to contact artists.

The American Music Awards provided an unusual logistical advantage: many of the performers were already in Los Angeles on the same evening. After the ceremony, they could go directly to the recording session rather than coordinate separate journeys and dates. The schedule was tight, but that concentration of talent made an ambitious group recording possible. The Associated Press report on the film

What are the documentary’s most striking revelations?

Lionel Richie remembers being distracted by Jackson’s animals

Richie recalls visiting Michael Jackson’s home to work on the song and finding it hard to focus amid the household animals. In Netflix Tudum’s account, Richie describes a python appearing near a stack of albums and says he wanted to leave quickly. It is Richie’s anecdote, retold in retrospect—not independent documentation of what the animal did. Netflix Tudum’s guide to the documentary

Huey Lewis sang a line that had been reserved for Prince

The organizers had left a brief solo open for Prince, opposite Jackson’s part, but Prince did not attend the session. Lewis took the line and later recalled that his legs were shaking. The AP reports that Kenny Loggins suggested Lewis for the solo; Netflix Tudum also describes the reserved part and Lewis’s nerves. The film’s account explains who sang it, but it does not establish why Prince stayed away. AP · Netflix Tudum

Sheila E. felt she was being used as a possible route to Prince

TIME and the AP recount Sheila E.’s memory that people repeatedly asked whether she could persuade Prince to come. She said the requests made her feel she had been invited in the hope that she would draw him to the session. That is her interpretation of the situation; it should not be presented as independently established proof of the producers’ motive. TIME · AP

Cyndi Lauper’s jewelry made it harder to record

The AP reports that Lauper’s jangling jewelry interfered with the recording and helped prolong the session. It is a small but revealing production detail: even a room full of famous voices still had to solve ordinary sound problems before the performance could be captured cleanly. AP

Stevie Wonder helped Bob Dylan find his approach

Dylan reportedly felt out of his element among the other singers. The AP says Wonder mimicked an approach for Dylan’s solo; TIME adds that Wonder demonstrated the part at the piano before Dylan recorded it. The moment is a reminder that the session was not simply a parade of artists arriving ready to deliver perfect takes: performers helped one another work out how to make their individual contributions fit. A suggestion to sing in Swahili was abandoned

The AP reports that Wonder suggested Swahili lyrics and Waylon Jennings objected. The idea was dropped after the group learned Swahili was not spoken in Ethiopia, the famine-affected country at the center of the appeal. This episode is reported as part of the film’s story, rather than a claim that the group seriously recorded or released a Swahili version. AP

Was the session as effortless as the finished recording sounds?

No. The AP’s account describes technical and interpersonal friction, and the film captures the group’s exhaustion as the night gave way to morning. At one point, performers were asked to groove from the knees because pounding feet were disturbing the sound. Jones’s now-famous sign, “Check Your Ego at the Door,” offered a pointed reminder that individual star power had to serve the ensemble.

Richie later described the end of the long night as a moment of solidarity: “By 7 o’clock in the morning, we became a family,” he said, according to Netflix Tudum. The line is a participant’s reflection, not a neutral measure of how every person experienced the session. Netflix Tudum · AP

Where did the proceeds go, and what figures are documented?

TIME reports that most proceeds went to USA for Africa, while 10% was set aside for U.S. homelessness efforts at Stevie Wonder’s request. That allocation matters: the song’s proceeds were not all directed to a single cause. The sources cited here do not establish a sufficiently scoped total amount raised or a worldwide sales total, so neither should be inferred from the anecdotes below. TIME

  • Release date: Apple Music’s U.S.A. for Africa single listing gives March 7, 1985. Apple Music
  • Retail anecdote: TIME recounts that the Tower Records Sunset Boulevard store sold 1,000 copies in two days, compared with about 100–125 copies in a typical week. That is one store’s reported experience, not a national sales figure. TIME
  • Canadian certification: Music Canada’s database lists the physical single as triple platinum, dated June 1, 1985. This is a Canadian industry certification, not a global sales total. Music Canada

How should viewers read the film’s revelations?

The documentary pairs archival footage and recovered audio with interviews recorded decades later. That combination makes the session feel immediate, but a vivid anecdote is still a recollection unless the footage or another source independently supports it. When weighing a particular story, ask who tells it, whether it is visible or audible in the archive, and whether reporting outside the film corroborates it.

Nguyen told the AP, “For me, it was just important that we told a story that was honest.” Producer Julia Nottingham described the film as “a celebration of the power of creativity and the power of collective humanity.” Those remarks frame the filmmakers’ aims; they do not make every remembered detail equally verifiable.
