The announced The Greatest American Hero reboot is a comic-book revival from AMP Comics—not a newly confirmed TV series. AMP announced a Free Comic Book Day special for May 2, 2026, followed by a planned series launch on July 29, 2026. Those are the publisher’s announced dates; current availability and whether the series launched on schedule have not been confirmed here.
What is the release date for The Greatest American Hero reboot?
AMP Comics announced that its The Greatest American Hero Free Comic Book Day special edition would be available in comic shops on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The publisher said the special would offer a first taste of the rebooted series and feature a cover by David Mack. AMP announced July 29, 2026, as the scheduled launch date for the series. AMP Comics
Both dates have passed. The announcement establishes AMP’s schedule, but does not establish whether the July launch happened as planned or whether the special or subsequent issues are currently in stock. Check with a comic shop or AMP for current availability.
Is the reboot a television show or a comic?
It is a comic-book revival. AMP announced in 2025 that it had acquired comic-book publishing rights to the property and was developing the new series. That announcement is distinct from earlier television proposals, which were reported as development efforts rather than released reboots. AMP Comics

What is known about the first-look image?
AMP’s announcement describes a David Mack cover for the Free Comic Book Day special, but the accessible reporting does not establish the precise contents of the first-look image. It would be misleading to infer its scene, characters, or design from the announcement alone. AMP Comics
How does the comic connect to the original series?
The original The Greatest American Hero aired on ABC from 1981 to 1983 and starred William Katt and Robert Culp. Its premise follows an ordinary man given a red suit by aliens that grants him superpowers. After losing the instruction manual, he has to learn how to use those abilities through trial and error.
