James Whitbrook calls it the game’s best moment in his December 10, 2024, Gizmodo/io9 feature—a critical judgment, not an official ranking.
Why the jar test matters
In the game’s third act, Indy and Italian journalist Gina Lombardi travel to Thailand while pursuing Nazi archaeologist Emmerich Voss and the remaining artifacts tied to the Great Circle. In Sukhothai, they work with Pailin, leader of a local insurgent group, and her uncle Sunan.
Before the temple journey, Pailin and Sunan test Indy by asking him to reach into a jar they say will manifest a person’s greatest fear. Indy expects snakes. Instead, the jar holds offal for soup stock. The joke briefly makes his fear seem like the target of a prank; the later temple encounter gives it a real and dangerous form.
How the Sukhothai snake sequence plays
A giant snake guards the temple. Indy must scramble between hiding places as it swims through the water, then fight from a small ruin using ancient spears. The scene alternates between escape and attack rather than letting the player simply rush the creature.

Whitbrook’s reading is that this slow circling, concealment, and wait for an opening make the controls’ friction work with the fiction. The player has to endure the threat and time a response, echoing Indy’s vulnerability rather than presenting him as instantly in control.
Sound makes the fear immediate
The sequence’s soundscape is central to Whitbrook’s argument. Indy’s labored breathing and muffled screams underwater, alongside the snake’s hiss and clicks, make the danger feel close even when the creature is not visible. Listening and waiting become part of the encounter’s tension, not merely pauses between attacks.

That is why the jar’s comic fake-out pays off: the game first establishes what Indy expects, then makes the player inhabit the fear that the joke had momentarily defused. Whitbrook calls the scene the game’s best moment because its mechanics, sound, and character premise converge in one playable sequence.
