Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy give the courtship a persuasive spark, but the film’s shifts in tone make the romance and monster spectacle harder to join into one coherent whole.
What is The Gorge about?
Directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean, this 2025 Apple Original Film pairs highly trained operatives stationed in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast, classified gorge. The official premise has them bonding from a distance while keeping watch over an unknown threat; when a larger danger emerges, they have to work together. That setup makes the separation both the film’s central romantic device and the source of its suspense.
The story’s appeal lies in the contrast: intimate communication across a divide on one side, an unexplained danger below on the other. The film eventually gives that danger a more creature-driven, action-oriented role. The shift is part of the hook, but it also puts pressure on the relationship and the mystery to feel like parts of the same story.
Do Teller and Taylor-Joy make the romance work?
The leads’ chemistry is the strongest support for the meet-cute. Their characters’ distance gives the early connection room to develop through conversation and anticipation rather than conventional face-to-face courtship. That approach offers a clear romantic premise, though it asks the dialogue and performances to make a bond across the gorge feel substantial.

Jake Coyle’s Associated Press review, published February 13, 2025, likewise praised the pairing while questioning the romantic turn: “Questionable as the romantic turn is, Taylor-Joy and Teller have convincing chemistry.” That is Coyle’s judgment, not a measure of critical or audience consensus. His review awarded the film one and a half stars out of four.
Do the monsters and genre shifts fit together?
The Gorge moves among romance, action, science fiction and monster-movie ingredients. The shift from guarded mystery to creature action changes the film’s scale and energy: what begins with two people separated by geography and duty becomes a more direct confrontation with danger. For some viewers, that escalation will be the fun of the mash-up; for others, it may make the earlier romantic focus feel less integrated with the spectacle.
Coyle’s AP review found the tonal changes and screenplay less successful than the production quality. That criticism gets to the film’s main balancing act: the romance needs enough space to matter, while the threat needs enough weight to justify the action. The cast’s chemistry helps bridge those modes, but it does not necessarily make every transition feel smooth.
How is the production, and who should watch?
Coyle’s review describes the production as stronger than the script, while criticizing the film’s tonal shifts and gloss. In practical terms, The Gorge is best approached as a high-concept genre blend rather than a tightly grounded romance or a single-minded monster thriller. Viewers drawn to the combination of an unusual courtship setup, science-fiction mystery and creature action are likelier to find its premise appealing than viewers who want one consistent tone.
