The Golden Girls centers on four friends sharing a home in Miami Beach: Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty). Blanche owns the house, while Dorothy, Rose and Sophia are her housemates. Dorothy and Sophia are the only mother-and-daughter pair among the four.
Who are the four Golden Girls?
| Character | Actor | Connection and situation | Role in the comedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dorothy Zbornak | Bea Arthur (Beatrice Arthur) | A divorced schoolteacher and Sophia’s daughter. | Her dry wit and direct responses often cut through the conversation. |
| Rose Nylund | Betty White | A widow and community volunteer from St. Olaf, Minnesota. | Her stories about her hometown frequently become comic detours. |
| Blanche Devereaux | Rue McClanahan | A widow who owns the Miami house the others share. | Her romantic confidence is a recurring part of her character. |
| Sophia Petrillo | Estelle Getty | Dorothy’s elderly, widowed mother. | Her blunt perspective and lively presence make her more than the group’s elder. |
These are useful starting points, not complete personality summaries: the stories also give each woman relationships, family concerns, work and community ties, and personal dilemmas.
How are Dorothy and Sophia related?
Dorothy is Sophia’s daughter. They are the only relatives among the four central women; Blanche, Dorothy and Rose share the home as housemates, and the women’s friendship gives their household the feel of a chosen family.
Why do the women live together?
Blanche owns the Miami Beach house and rents rooms to Dorothy and Rose. Sophia, Dorothy’s mother, also lives there. The shared home brings the women’s different experiences of romance, family, aging, memory and community into the same everyday setting.

What is the series’ background?
The Golden Girls aired on NBC from 1985 to 1992. D23 dates its run from September 14, 1985, to September 12, 1992, while the Television Academy lists 180 episodes and NBC scheduling blocks extending through September 1992. The Television Academy describes the series as an early representation of older women building a circle of friends that functions as family, with an energetic cast and colorful Miami setting.
D23 reports 11 Emmy Awards for the cast and crew collectively over 1986–1992; that figure is not 11 awards won by the four leads individually. Rue McClanahan won the 1987 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work as Blanche, according to her Television Academy biography.
