But Blessy’s adaptation keeps widening that story with flashbacks and relationship material, and the added layers can weaken the ordeal’s momentum. Prithviraj Sukumaran gives the film its strongest human center in the second half, though his performance does not make every cinematic choice land.
What the film inherits from Goat Days
The Goat Life, also known as Aadujeevitham, adapts Benyamin’s 2008 Malayalam novel, published in English as Goat Days. Its central figure, Najeeb, leaves Kerala seeking work and ends up forced to tend goats in a remote Saudi desert setting. The film’s official synopsis describes a man cut off from family, subjected to hard labor and losing hope and identity as he struggles to reclaim his life.

The novel’s first-person narration is a defining part of its force: readers encounter Najeeb’s inner life directly. The film must convey that interiority through image, sound and performance instead. That shift offers an opportunity for visual storytelling, but it also means that showing the desert’s harshness is not, by itself, the same as making the audience feel Najeeb’s private experience. The Indian Express’s March 25, 2024, account frames the adaptation question as whether the film can do justice to the essence of the novel.
Do the flashbacks and relationship material deepen the ordeal?
Blessy said the film expanded parts of the relationship between Najeeb and Sainu while curtailing other portions of the novel. That choice gives the story more room to establish what Najeeb has left behind, but it also creates a structural trade-off: every return to the life before the desert pauses the immediate struggle for survival.
#1 Best Overall
Talking Films’ March 28, 2024, review argues that the flashback balance and some elaborations blunt the film’s momentum rather than creating a distinct cinematic identity. That is a critical judgment, not a universal response, but it identifies the adaptation’s central risk. When the desert ordeal is already the film’s strongest dramatic engine, extra explanation can make the experience feel less urgent instead of more intimate.
Blessy has described a wider intention: he wanted to communicate not only Najeeb’s survival but also the continuing struggle of life, sustained by hopes and dreams. In an April 1, 2024, Hindustan Times interview, he put it this way: “One has to die living.” The ambition helps explain why the adaptation reaches beyond the mechanics of survival. Whether its added material earns that wider meaning depends on how well it remains connected to Najeeb’s immediate experience.

Prithviraj’s performance is the film’s strongest anchor
The most convincing bridge between the novel’s interior voice and the film’s visible ordeal is Prithviraj Sukumaran. Talking Films singles out his portrayal in the second half even while criticizing other aspects of the film. His performance gives the later stretch a human center that the surrounding spectacle cannot supply on its own.
That distinction matters: a committed performance can make Najeeb’s endurance legible without making every pacing decision or visual choice persuasive. Blessy told the Indian Express that he met the real-life Najeeb, who was emotionally distressed and unable to recall much of his past, and that Prithviraj did not meet him so he could approach the role without that direct influence. This is the newspaper’s account of the filmmakers’ remarks, not an independently established biography. It offers context for the acting choice, rather than proof that the portrayal succeeds.

Where spectacle and craft get in the way
Talking Films also faults the songs, CGI and pacing. Those criticisms point to a tension in the film’s approach: desert scale can make the ordeal visible, but spectacle is not a substitute for sustained tension or access to Najeeb’s thoughts. When the film elaborates around its central predicament, its most affecting moments are those in which Prithviraj’s performance carries the experience rather than the production’s display.
The production itself was long and difficult. Blessy’s note on the official film website says filming began in 2018 and concluded in 2022; the crew spent approximately 65 days in the desert and encountered COVID-19 quarantine measures. Those details establish the scale of the undertaking, but they do not settle whether the artistic choices work.

Does the adaptation do justice to the novel?
Not consistently. The Goat Life has a potent survival premise and a second-half performance that gives it genuine emotional weight, but its expanded relationship story and flashback construction can interrupt the very ordeal meant to hold the film together. The adaptation is most effective when it lets Najeeb’s visible struggle and Prithviraj’s performance suggest the inner life that Benyamin’s first-person narration could state directly. It is less persuasive when elaboration and spectacle announce the premise instead of deepening it.
For readers weighing the two versions, the difference is not simply book versus film: Goat Days offers sustained access to Najeeb’s perspective, while the film has to build that access through cinematic choices that are unevenly successful.
