Girls Carrying Shit turns the everyday balancing act of carrying keys, a phone and other essentials into a visual argument about clothing: pockets that cannot hold what people need are not very useful pockets. Creator Halle Robbe began the Instagram project after a bagless errand in New York City made friends recognize a familiar workaround. Its humor points to a practical design problem—and a wider history of who gets convenient places to carry things.
What is Girls Carrying Shit?
Girls Carrying Shit (GCS) is an Instagram project collecting images of people holding the things they carry when their clothes do not offer a suitable pocket. The objects range from everyday belongings to more unexpected items; the owner’s story is part of the appeal, not just the improvised grip. Polyester reported that Robbe started the account in July 2021 and that submissions eventually came from beyond her original circle: Polyester’s interview with Halle Robbe.
The project’s bio, quoted by Yeehaw, jokes: “After thousands of years without pockets, non-men have evolved a superior grip to carry our shit.” That is the account’s framing, not a scientific claim. Robbe told Yeehaw that the project celebrates adaptations to the lack of useful pockets in women’s clothing, while its intended audience is broader than cisgender women: Yeehaw’s interview with Robbe.
How Robbe started the project
Robbe told Yeehaw that she was living in New York City and often ran to nearby shops without a bag, partly to avoid paying for one. During an office break, she bought two cans of Red Bull and carried them along with her keys, wallet and AirPods. She posted a photo of the items to her personal Instagram while feeling burnt out. Friends said they did the same, and she started Girls Carrying Shit later that day.

What pocket research says—and what it does not
A September 17, 2023 Guardian feature relayed findings from The Pudding’s 2018 analysis of jeans: women’s pockets were, on average, 48% less deep and 6.5% slimmer than men’s, and only 40% of women’s front pockets could fit a smartphone. Those are The Pudding’s reported figures as presented by The Guardian, not measurements independently rechecked here; they describe that analysis, not every garment or current clothing market. The Guardian also mentions a YouGov study about women’s preferences for pockets in jackets and trousers, but its feature does not provide the study’s date or specific findings. It therefore cannot establish a particular preference or quantify how many women want larger pockets.

Why a pocket’s usefulness matters
A pocket is functional only if it can hold the item someone needs to carry, in a position that feels practical and secure. A shallow or narrow pocket may technically be present while still failing to accommodate a smartphone. That gap between a garment’s pocket count and its real capacity helps explain the kind of workaround GCS documents.
For someone comparing clothes, the useful questions are concrete: can a phone and wallet fit, does the pocket keep them secure, where is it placed, and is it usable in the garment’s intended style? The available reporting supports the concern about pocket dimensions and smartphone fit, but it does not establish a ranking of particular garments or brands.

Pockets have a longer history
The pocket debate is not only about contemporary clothing design. The Guardian points readers to two books that approach pockets historically: Barbara Burman and Arianne Fennetaux’s The Pocket: A Hidden History of Women’s Lives, 1660–1900 and Hannah Carlson’s Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close. Together, their titles signal a useful broader frame: pockets are both practical objects and part of the history of how people keep belongings close.
