George warns her not to assume he will still be home when she returns. It is a threat of separation, not confirmation that the Russells have divorced or permanently split.
What happens at the end of “A Different World”?
Gladys’s letter makes the consequences of her marriage to Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, impossible for George and Bertha to ignore. Gladys has become a duchess, but she is struggling in England, where Lady Sara criticizes her and exercises authority over the household. Bertha responds to the news by saying she will go to England and make things right.
George’s reply turns the moment into a crisis between the two of them: he says Bertha should not count on finding him at home when she comes back. The episode leaves open whether he will actually leave. It does not show a divorce or establish a permanent separation.
Why are George and Bertha fighting?
The letter is the immediate trigger, but the conflict has been building around work, trust, and their different roles in family decisions. George is frustrated by business setbacks and sees Bertha’s attempt to charm Alfred Merrick as humiliating when the potential deal falls through. Bertha counters that George is the one who failed to close it.

They are also not sharing information on equal terms. TV Insider reports that George’s failure to disclose the stakes and Clay’s firing contributes to Bertha’s feeling of exclusion. Actor Morgan Spector describes George as vulnerable and feeling unable to talk to Bertha; that is Spector’s account of the character, not a guarantee about what happens next. By the time George reads Gladys’s letter, professional frustration and family resentment have converged.
What is happening to Gladys in England?
Gladys has the title of duchess, but little practical control over life at Sidmouth Castle. Lady Sara criticizes and undermines her choices and controls household decisions. Hector’s revelation of how much his sister has managed their lives helps explain why Gladys is having trouble adjusting to her new household.

Her letter home links that struggle to the conflict in New York. Bertha’s determination to intervene also sharpens the irony of the ending: the marriage Bertha secured to raise Gladys’s social standing has left Gladys unhappy, while Bertha’s actions around that marriage have helped damage her own relationship with George.
