Bertha reopens the marriage negotiations after George calls them off, and Gladys agrees to marry Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, under pressure from both parents. At the unveiling of her portrait, the family announces the engagement; Gladys’s pearl choker snaps as she tugs at it, leaving the episode’s public triumph shadowed by her distress.

Why does Bertha bring the Duke back after George ends the negotiations?

George initially stops the talks because of the Duke’s financial demands and the cost of maintaining his properties. Gladys believes the match is over and feels relieved. Bertha sees the collapse as a threat to the social future she wants for her daughter—and to her own ambitions—so she brings Hector back to the table.

Bertha reframes the financial arrangement so Gladys’s income can help sustain the Duke’s estate. That change allows the negotiations to resume, despite George’s earlier refusal. The episode’s reversal is therefore not a change of heart from George so much as Bertha’s determination to make the match workable on different terms. TVLine’s recap and ELLE’s recap describe the negotiation and its outcome.

Why does Gladys agree to marry the Duke?

Gladys does not agree because the episode establishes a romance with Hector. Her hope of reuniting with Billy has faded, and both Bertha and George press her to give the Duke a chance. The recaps describe her as crying and feeling betrayed as she is persuaded; George presents the arrangement as being in her interest.

Her agreement comes as pressure narrows her choices. That context matters: the engagement is a family bargain that Gladys accepts, not a love match she enthusiastically chooses.

What happens at the portrait unveiling?

The family announces Gladys’s engagement during the unveiling of her portrait by John Singer Sargent. George delivers the “happy” news, and Bertha calls the planned wedding “the wedding of the century.” Their confident public presentation contrasts with Gladys’s reaction.

As the announcement lands, Gladys tugs at her pearl choker until it snaps. The break is the episode’s closing visual emphasis on her distress and the cost of the bargain. ELLE calls it a bad omen, but that is the recap’s interpretation: the episode detail established in the recaps is that the necklace breaks while Gladys is visibly upset. It does not identify a specific future event the break predicts.

How the other storylines echo the episode’s divisions

Peggy and Dr. William Kirkland’s courtship advances during a Newport outing, but meeting his family complicates the relationship. William’s mother, Elizabeth, looks down on Peggy’s family history, including her father Arthur’s experience of enslavement before emancipation and his later pharmaceutical business.

In TheWrap’s interview, Denée Benton and co-writer Sonja Warfield discuss the storyline in relation to Black elites, family histories, and colorism. TVLine quotes series creator Julian Fellowes describing divisions and rivalries within communities: “It’s important to remember that every community has its own snobberies, its own separations, its own divisions. It’s a myth to eulogize one community as not having any of this and another other community as full of it, because it’s just not true. Human beings are rivals from the moment they leave their mother’s womb.” The comment offers context for the episode’s wider social tensions, rather than a direct explanation of the Russells’ marriage negotiations.

Elsewhere, Larry and Jack pursue investors for Jack’s clock, Ada continues her temperance campaign while grieving Luke, and Agnes resents losing influence in the household. These threads broaden the episode beyond Gladys’s engagement, but it is her pressured acceptance—and the family’s celebratory announcement—that gives the ending its force.
