Bertha’s plan for Gladys collides with George’s objection
Bertha wants Gladys to marry Hector, Duke of Buckingham, and uses newspaper leaks to help move the match forward. George challenges her control of their daughter’s future, asking, “When will I get a say in our daughter’s life?” The line is quoted as episode dialogue in the Preservation Society of Newport County’s episode guide.
The guide’s archivist, Genna Duplisea, interprets Bertha’s maneuver as a way to exercise influence in a society that denies women formal economic and political power. That strategy may give Bertha leverage, but it comes at Gladys’s expense: her mother’s ambition is driving a decision that should be Gladys’s to make.

Gladys leaves, then returns
Gladys runs away from the Russell home and goes to the Carltons. Bertha brings her back, but Gladys does not become engaged in this episode and remains distressed by her mother’s plan, according to an independent recap. Her return resolves the immediate disappearance, not the conflict over her choice.
Peggy’s illness brings the Scotts into the van Rhijn household
Peggy is dangerously ill, prompting Dorothy and Mr. Scott to come to Agnes and Ada’s home. The arrival exposes the racial prejudice shaping the household: Dorothy initially moves to use the servants’ entrance. The Newport guide also notes an offer for Peggy to speak to a women’s group in Newport. The Preservation Society guide provides the episode-specific context for the scene.

Ada’s pledge tests who has authority at home
Ada asks the staff to sign a temperance pledge, but some resist. Agnes sees the request as an overreach and asks, “Are you going to tell them what to eat for lunch?” The Preservation Society guide reproduces the line as Agnes van Rhijn’s dialogue in the episode. Read its guide.
The exchange is more than a disagreement about temperance. Ada is asserting authority in a household where Agnes has long set the terms, while the staff’s reluctance makes clear that a new mistress’s wishes do not automatically become everyone else’s obligation.

Marian, Larry, and Aurora face the cost of public judgment
Marian and Larry’s courtship carries reputational risk for Marian, placing private desire against the demands of public respectability. Meanwhile, Aurora Fane is being pushed toward a divorce she does not want, and Mrs. Astor’s response underscores how forcefully social disapproval can shape a woman’s options. These strands echo Gladys’s predicament: personal wishes meet institutions and customs that constrain them. The episode guide discusses the social conflicts and the independent recap corroborates the plot developments. Newport guide; independent recap.
Newport settings give the conflicts a physical backdrop
The episode’s featured mansions include The Elms and The Breakers. The Preservation Society guide names the Music Room at The Breakers as a filming location and identifies rooms at The Elms used in scenes set in the Russell home. The guide to the episode’s locations connects these settings to the Newport world the story depicts.
