The best-documented part of their story is that shared experience—and Foley’s affectionate, joking way of recalling it.
How Mick Foley and Kevin James became friends
Foley has called James his “high school pal” and described the two competing in their school’s wrestling room. In a statement reproduced by Fightful on November 13, 2023, Foley explained what those repeated matches meant to him: “Had I never ventured down to my high school wrestling room and competed with Kevin day in and day out, there’s no way I would have had the confidence to take a shot at my dream of wrestling professionally.” Fightful’s account reproduced Foley’s Instagram post.
That gives the friendship a sturdier origin story than a celebrity coincidence: the future wrestler and the future comedian knew each other as teenagers through the sport Foley would later make his career. Foley’s own account connects their regular high-school competition with his confidence to try for the wrestling business; it does not claim that James trained him for a professional career.
Foley’s funny way of remembering the connection
Foley framed the post with “THE KING OF QUEENS!”—a nod to James’s best-known sitcom role—and joked about a photoshopped championship belt. The gag lets two very different public images meet: James as a sitcom star and Foley as a wrestler whose career included the personas Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind.

The humor is in the contrast, but the point Foley makes is sincere. He credits those high-school matches with helping him believe he could pursue wrestling professionally. That is the documented heart of the story, rather than evidence of a comedy partnership or a private tale of lifelong exploits.
What the public record does—and doesn’t—show
WWE’s biography of Mick Foley provides context for the career Foley was aiming toward: it identifies his wrestling personas, his work as a writer, and his autobiography, Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks. The biography does not establish that Kevin James appears in the book, so it is best understood as background on Foley’s career, not as a source for their friendship.
Foley’s account is the available first-person evidence here. The reviewed sources do not provide James’s own account of the friendship or establish how often the two are in contact today. Foley’s official site lists his projects and appearances but does not answer that question, so their current relationship should not be inferred from the high-school story.

For more about Foley’s wrestling life, WWE identifies Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks as his autobiography. The available biography does not connect the book to James, but it offers broader context on the career Foley says he gained confidence to pursue.
