Netflix’s January 1, 2026 guide says the finale and every other episode are streaming exclusively on Netflix.
The four-episode refresher, in release order
The recommendations were reported by TVLine ahead of Season 5, based on a Duffer Brothers interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The four episodes revisit the series’ mythology and its most important Season 4 setup; the reporting does not establish an official ranking among them.
| Episode | Story thread it refreshes |
|---|---|
| Season 2, Episode 4 — “Will the Wise” | Will Byers’s connection to the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer, as the show’s mythology begins to expand. |
| Season 2, Episode 6 — “The Spy” | The continuing Will and Mind Flayer story, with Will’s role as a link to the threat made more explicit. |
| Season 4, Episode 7 — “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab” | Henry Creel, Eleven’s history, and revelations about the Upside Down. |
| Season 4, Episode 9 — “The Piggyback” | The Season 4 finale’s confrontation and the consequences of the rifts—a direct bridge into Season 5. |
What each episode brings back
Season 2, Episode 4: “Will the Wise”
Will’s connection to the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer is central to this part of the story. The Duffers’ recommendation reflects Season 2’s role in establishing the show’s larger mythology. Matt Duffer put it this way: “That’s where we started to really plant the seeds for the mythology.”
Season 2, Episode 6: “The Spy”
This continues the Will and Mind Flayer thread and makes Will’s connection to the threat clearer. Together, the two Season 2 selections are the best fit if the part of the story you want to refresh is how the threat connects to Will and the show’s mythology.

Season 4, Episode 7: “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”
This episode revisits Henry Creel and Eleven’s history while delivering major Upside Down revelations. Ross Duffer described its purpose: “That [episode] starts unveiling some of the Upside Down mythology and starts giving some answers.”
Season 4, Episode 9: “The Piggyback”
As the Season 4 finale, this is the most immediate preparation for Season 5. It returns viewers to the final confrontation and leaves Hawkins facing the consequences of the rifts.

Which episodes to choose if you have limited time
The four are a creator-recommended refresher, not compulsory viewing. Choose according to which story thread you need most:
- For Will and the Mind Flayer: Watch “Will the Wise” and “The Spy,” the Season 2 pair.
- For Henry, Eleven, and Upside Down revelations: Watch “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab.”
- For the cliffhanger leading out of Season 4: Watch “The Piggyback.”
- For the full recommended refresher: Watch all four in release order.
The Duffers have also said that ideas developed during Season 2 fed into Season 5. In a Netflix interview, Ross Duffer said, “For Season 5, we’re pulling from a lot of those big Season 2 ideas… A lot of our big ending stuff has pulled from stuff that we thought was going to be in Season 2.” That adds context for why the Season 2 episodes feature in this short list.
