The Forgotten Army – Azaadi ke Liye is a 2020 Prime Video drama about the Indian National Army (INA), also known as the Azad Hind Fauj, and its wartime struggle against British rule. It frames that history through soldiers’ experiences and the family memories that endure afterward. The series offers an entry point to a lesser-known story of Indian independence, but its dramatic scenes and promotional synopsis should be distinguished from what archival records establish.
What is The Forgotten Army – Azaadi ke Liye about?
Prime Video describes the series as a drama about INA soldiers led by Subhas Chandra Bose, with a family-centered story linking wartime events to later memory. That is the platform’s synopsis of the show, not independent verification of every character, scene, or event. Read the Prime Video series listing for its official premise and characterization.

The listing says the soldiers “marched 3,884 kms from Singapore to Delhi.” This is a figure in Prime Video’s promotional copy; the historical sources cited here do not independently establish that route measurement. Treat it as the series listing’s claim, not as a confirmed itinerary.
Who were the INA and Azad Hind Fauj?
INA is short for the Indian National Army; Azad Hind Fauj is another name for it. The series places these soldiers and Bose at the center of its account of wartime opposition to British rule. To go beyond that broad framing—to examine how the force was formed, how recruitment worked, its campaigns, its alliance with Japan, or its military effectiveness—read historical scholarship and archival records rather than relying on a dramatic synopsis.

What does the archival record show about Bose’s appeal?
A teaching resource from the UK National Archives presents archival material on Indian independence, including the text of a Bose radio broadcast. The displayed appeal reads: “All those countrymen of mine who are prepared to fight for the liberation if India will please get into touch with me at once, either directly or through their local organisation.” The quotation is evidence of an appeal to potential supporters; by itself, it does not establish how widely people responded or settle broader questions about the INA’s role in independence.
Explore the National Archives’ Indian independence teaching resource for the archival material. Its value is different from the series’: a broadcast text records what Bose said, while a drama stages people and events for a narrative.

How should viewers compare the drama with history?
Separate three kinds of evidence when assessing the story:
- The series’ portrayal: Prime Video and Amazon describe the premise, characters, family dimension, and journey. These are useful for understanding what the production intends to show, but they are not neutral historical documentation.
- Contemporary records: Archival material, such as the Bose broadcast presented by the National Archives, can document what was said or recorded at a particular time. A single document does not answer every question about events or consequences.
- Historical interpretation: Historians synthesize records and other evidence to assess events, causes, and significance. Peter Ward Fay’s The Forgotten Army: India’s Armed Struggle for Independence, 1942–1945 is a directly relevant historical study; a bibliographic record identifies it as a book, but does not by itself establish its detailed conclusions.
Amazon’s 15 January 2020 press release quotes Prime Video India executive Vijay Subramaniam saying the production drew on “several years of extensive research” to gather fragmented memories. That is the producer’s account of the series’ development, not independent corroboration of the historical claims made in the show. The Amazon announcement documents the production’s own framing.
