The flying car in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a Ford Anglia 105E—but the film’s flight and crash scenes were made with a fleet of adapted cars and practical effects, not one enchanted vehicle. The production identified its light-blue 1962 Anglia as registration 7990 TD and used 16 Anglias in different configurations.
What kind of car is the flying Ford Anglia?
The film’s light-blue car is identified as a 1962 Ford Anglia 105E, registration 7990 TD, in Wizarding World’s account of how the flying Anglia was created. That identifies the vehicle in the production story; it does not mean every shot used that registration or the same physical car.
The Anglia 105E was a real British two-door saloon. The British Motor Museum’s record for a 1962 Anglia 105E Deluxe lists a four-cylinder 997 cc petrol engine, 39 bhp and a top speed of 74 mph (119 km/h). Those are specifications for the museum’s example, not for every modified car used on set.
How the production made the car fly
Special effects supervisor John Richardson described removing the engine and stripping the interior from one car to reduce its weight. The team mounted it on a rotating crane with a gimbal head, so the car could be pitched, rolled and turned to suggest flight. For moving shots, the rig was placed on a specially adapted American pickup with modified suspension and outriggers. These were practical effects setups, not evidence that a single car performed every flying shot.

Why the film used 16 Anglias
Richardson said the production had 16 Anglias, each adapted for different filming needs. Some were sectioned to make interior shots possible; others were fitted with racing engines for fast driving or damaged for the Whomping Willow crash. The effects account also describes “wild” cars that ran in the Forbidden Forest for a year.
Museum collections provide a related but distinct part of the story. The National Motor Museum describes an Anglia 105E in its collection as having been used during filming. The existence of multiple production cars matters when interpreting the history: the Anglia reported stolen in 2005 was one of several film props, not necessarily the unique car behind every memorable shot.

The real Anglia’s place in British motoring
Ford launched the 105E in 1959, and production ended in 1967. The British Motor Museum says just over one million Anglia 105Es were built. Its record places the model among small family-car competitors such as the Mini and Triumph Herald. The National Motor Museum gives a related but differently scoped figure: more than one million 105E and more powerful 123E models combined by the end of production.
The film cars’ engines, interiors and bodies were altered for production, so museum specifications are best understood as context for the road-going model rather than a complete description of the props.

The enchanted car in the story
In the fictional world, Arthur Weasley enchants the blue Ford Anglia to fly and equips it with an invisibility booster. Harry and Ron borrow it after they are unable to board the Hogwarts Express. Their journey ends when they crash into the Whomping Willow; the car later escapes. Those abilities belong to the story’s magical vehicle, not to the real Ford model or the effects rigs used to film it. The official Harry Potter fact file describes the car’s fictional features and role.
