He has no single fixed, Superman-style vulnerability; his limits tend to depend on the technique, story and continuity. For a direct entry point, start with The Flash: Born to Run, then continue into Mark Waid’s run.
Who is Wally West as the Flash?
Wally first appears in the Flash legacy as Barry Allen’s young partner, Kid Flash. Taking over the Flash mantle gives his stories a central tension: he inherits a role associated with Barry, but must become a hero in his own right. DC’s reading guide presents that growth as a major part of Wally’s character, not merely a matter of getting faster.

What are Wally West’s strengths?
Super-speed shaped by the Speed Force
DC describes the Speed Force as an energy field that grants velocity powers. It is a fictional framework for making the extraordinary effects of super-speed work in stories, not a scientific account of real-world physics. DC dates Mark Waid’s introduction of the concept to Wally’s story in The Flash #91 (1994), where it also helped explain earlier speedster stories. The explanation has changed with different writers and eras; DC’s Speed Force explainer discusses both its history and its changing interpretations.
Using speed in more than one way
Wally’s powers can be useful beyond moving quickly from place to place. DC’s discussion of Flash phasing describes Wally manipulating speed, including taking speed from or sharing it with others connected to the Speed Force. That kind of control can affect a confrontation or help an ally, rather than simply giving Wally a faster sprint. The technique and its success depend on the story.

Vibrating through solid matter—often called phasing—is another ability associated with Wally. DC’s article on how the Flash phases also describes intangibility and time travel among Flash abilities. Those are character-level capabilities, not a promise that every Wally story uses them or that he controls them equally well in every continuity.
What are Wally West’s weaknesses and limits?
There is no established, universal “kryptonite” that reliably defeats Wally in every story. DC’s article about how to beat the Flash says the character has no clear, known weakness like Superman; that broad observation does not mean Wally is without vulnerabilities or practical limits.
Some techniques can be difficult to control
Phasing is a concrete example. DC notes that Wally has not always performed it cleanly: objects could explode when he passed through them. This is a story-specific control problem, not a permanent rule that phasing always causes damage. It shows why a technique can be powerful and still carry risk when a speedster cannot execute it precisely.
His powers depend on the story’s rules
The Speed Force is a flexible fictional concept, and its rules have shifted across writers and continuities. Wally’s particular feats, control and available techniques should therefore be read in context rather than treated as a fixed scientific system. An ability shown in one comic does not establish that Wally can use it identically in every other version.

What should you read to get into Wally West?
Start with The Flash: Born to Run
For Wally’s origin and the clearest foundation for his character, begin with The Flash: Born to Run. The story originally ran in The Flash #62–65 in 1992. DC recommends it as Wally’s origin and calls it essential for his fans; its 2026 overview describes a coming-of-age story about Wally’s family, childhood and path from Kid Flash. It is also identified as the beginning of Mark Waid’s run. DC confirms that a trade collection exists, though editions and contents can vary.
Continue with Mark Waid’s run
Waid’s run is the broader route for readers who want to follow Wally’s development beyond his origin. It explores the Speed Force and his effort to define himself apart from Barry’s legacy. DC recommends the run as a reading path, but the sources here do not establish a definitive issue-by-issue map of collected editions; check the contents of a particular edition before using it to follow a precise sequence.

Choose The Flash (2023) #1 for a newer starting point
If you would rather begin with a contemporary Wally-led adventure than go back to his origin, try The Flash #1 from the 2023 series. DC’s issue listing describes Wally experimenting with new applications of his powers and encountering new realms and threats. The issue is by Simon Spurrier and Mike Deodato Jr.; DC lists September 26, 2023, as its original on-sale date and $4.99 as its original U.S. price, not a current retail price. The listing also points readers toward digital access through DC Universe Infinite and comic-shop discovery.
