Mattel introduced its first explicitly autistic Barbie on January 12, 2026: Fashionistas Doll #245, product number JJN58. Developed with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the doll includes a communication tablet, noise-canceling headphones and a working fidget spinner. Those choices represent some autistic experiences and tools—not a template for how autistic people look, communicate or play.
What Mattel released
The doll is part of Mattel’s Fashionistas line. Its US product listing names it “Barbie Fashionistas Doll #245 in Purple Striped Dress, Autistic Barbie With Accessories.” The product number is JJN58. Mattel says development with ASAN took more than 18 months. Mattel’s US product page identifies the item and its included features; Mattel’s German announcement describes the collaboration and launch.

What the doll and accessories are intended to represent
Clothing and movement
The doll wears a relaxed lavender-and-white striped dress with a ruffle hem and flat purple shoes. Mattel says the slightly averted gaze reflects that some autistic people avoid direct eye contact. AP reported that the team discussed different clothing preferences and sensory experiences when choosing the dress, and selected flat shoes to suggest stability and ease of movement. These are the product team’s design explanations, not claims that all autistic people share these preferences.
Tools for sensory regulation and communication
The included accessories are noise-canceling headphones, a working pink finger-clip fidget spinner and a tablet depicting symbol-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). AAC refers to ways of communicating that supplement or replace speech; the tablet makes one such communication tool visible in play. The doll’s elbows and wrists are articulated.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed to reflect the world kids see today, this diverse line of Barbie Fashionistas dolls showcases bright and trendy styles that make for endless storytelling possibilities.
- Barbie partnered with the National Down Syndrome Society to design a Barbie doll with Down syndrome that celebrates this community.
- Meaningful symbols are incorporated throughout her outfit, and the blue and yellow color palette represents Down syndrome awareness.
- The three arrows in some of the hearts on the print represent the third 21st chromosome that individuals with Down syndrome have, and they point outwards to represent rising up and moving forward.
- Barbie doll wears pink eyeglasses – super cute and practical, too! Prescription eyeglasses are more common in individuals with Down syndrome than in the general population.
Mattel says the design aims to reflect some ways autistic people may experience, process and communicate with the world. AP reported that ASAN community engagement manager Noor Pervez worked closely with Mattel on the prototype. The Associated Press report also says the doll’s facial features drew inspiration from Mattel employees in India and mood boards depicting women with Indian backgrounds, reflecting the team’s interest in representing an underrepresented segment of the autistic community.
Why it is one representation, not a universal portrait
Autistic people have varied appearances, communication styles, sensory experiences and support needs. A doll can make some experiences and tools visible, but it cannot stand in for an entire community. Pervez put the distinction plainly: “autism doesn’t look any one way.” She added that the team could still try to show some of the ways autism expresses itself.
Rank #2
- INCLUSIVE PLAY: Barbie Fashionistas doll comes with a manual purple wheelchair and pink ramp for storytelling play (3 pieces total), designed to reflect the world kids see today, for ages 3 and up
- Barbie doll sparks play potential with a manual purple wheelchair and a pink ramp that help her get easily in and out of the Barbie Dreamhouse (sold separately, subject to availability).
- It's all about movement! This stylish doll has 22 articulation points for multiple posing and play options.
- She has straight blonde hair and wears a fun rainbow-checkered romper with a pink watch accessory and white sneakers.
- More variety makes collecting Barbie Fashionistas dolls even more fun -- they're the perfect gift for kids 3 years and older! (Each sold separately, subject to availability).
That distinction matters when interpreting the accessories and design. A child may recognize a familiar tool or experience in the doll, or may not identify with its choices at all. Neither reaction makes the doll more or less representative of autism as a whole.
