The first Alien: Romulus teaser arrived on March 20, 2024, introducing a story built around young space colonizers who scavenge a derelict station and encounter a dangerous life-form. Its creepy, gory edge is a reaction to the trailer—not an objective finding—but it fits director Fede Alvarez’s stated goal of returning the franchise to horror.
What the first Alien: Romulus teaser sets up
In its March 20, 2024 announcement, 20th Century Studios UK introduced the first teaser and framed the premise: a group of young space colonizers scavenges a derelict space station, where they come face-to-face with a terrifying life-form. That compact setup supplies the trailer’s strongest source of unease: an isolated, abandoned place and a threat the characters encounter while searching it.

The adjectives “creepy” and “gory” describe the impression the teaser gives, rather than a content classification or a verified shot-by-shot account. The studio synopsis supports the horror premise, but does not establish specific moments of gore. “Excellent” is likewise a matter of taste; the more concrete reason for optimism is the film’s clearly stated horror direction.
Why the trailer points back to Alien as horror
In an interview published by The Walt Disney Company on August 16, 2024, writer-director Fede Alvarez described the aim directly: “The whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie.” That makes the teaser’s threatening setup more than a generic monster-movie hook: it reflects the kind of experience Alvarez said he was trying to make.

- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Alvarez also described a mix of practical effects, animatronics, spaceship miniatures and computer-generated work: “That’s why we built everything on practical effects, animatronics, [and] miniatures for the spaceships, and combined them with the latest computer-generated work that the best companies like Industrial Light & Magic and WĒTĀ can provide.” That production approach can suggest a tangible, old-school texture, though it is an interpretation of the method rather than proof of how every scene looks.
Who made the film
20th Century Studios’ film page credits Alvarez as director and co-writer, alongside co-writer Rodo Sayagues. The listed cast is Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss and Walter Hill are listed as producers.

The teaser and the later official trailer are different releases
The March 20, 2024 release is the first teaser, announced by 20th Century Studios UK. The studio’s U.S. film page separately lists an “Official Trailer,” which the verified studio YouTube listing dates to June 4, 2024. Calling both videos the first trailer would blur that distinction; the March video is best identified as the first teaser.

The U.S. studio film page lists Alien: Romulus as rated R, with a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes and a U.S. release date of August 16, 2024. Release timing differed by market: the UK teaser announcement advertised cinemas from August 16, so that date should not be assumed to describe every territory.
