The official campaign describes the movie as a story of “redemption, hope, faith, and courageous confrontation with death.” The official website summarizes the premise this way: Based on the incredible true story of three Christian prisoners who face execution and win the entire prison camp to Christ in a stunning conclusion.
That wording is a promotional statement from the filmmakers, not independent historical documentation.

Timothy A. Chey is credited as both director and screenwriter of The Firing Squad. The promoted principal cast includes James Barrington, Kevin Sorbo, and Cuba Gooding Jr., with Madeline Anderson, Edmund Kwan, and Tupua Ainu’u also listed in the film’s campaign materials. Is The Firing Squad based on a true story?
The Firing Squad is presented by its filmmakers as based on or inspired by a true story, but the available official materials do not identify the three prisoners or provide enough historical evidence to independently reconstruct the case. The most accurate description is that the film is inspired by or based on a true story according to its official campaign.
The distinction matters because promotional language can communicate a film’s intended basis without proving every scene or plot event. The official homepage and about page use “based on” and “inspired by” language, while the campaign emphasizes the prisoners’ conversion and the effect on the prison camp. Neither cited official source supplies a full historical case file, names of the alleged prisoners, court records, or an independently documented account of the execution.
Viewers researching The Firing Squad true story should therefore separate two claims:
- Supported by the film’s campaign: the movie is presented as drawing on the story of three Christian prisoners facing execution.
- Not independently established by the available dossier: that every character, event, conversation, conversion, and ending detail occurred exactly as shown.
That careful wording does not change the film’s religious message; it simply avoids treating a promotional description as a complete historical record.

The Firing Squad runs 93 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, brief violence, and drug references. The rating makes the film more appropriate for mature teens and adults than for young children, especially because the story centers on condemned prisoners, execution, death, guilt, and religious transformation.
Parents should consider a child’s sensitivity to prison settings, impending execution, brief violent material, drug references, and intense religious themes. The PG-13 rating does not mean that the film is unsuitable for every younger viewer, but it does mean families should not assume that The Firing Squad is a children’s movie simply because it is faith-based.
| Viewer question | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Is the film suitable for young children? | Not automatically; the film is PG-13 and includes thematic elements, brief violence, and drug references. |
| Could mature teenagers watch it? | Possibly, depending on family standards and comfort with execution, prison, death, and religious themes. |
| What should adults know beforehand? | The central conflict involves condemned prisoners awaiting execution and a strongly Christian redemption message. |

Can a church show The Firing Squad?
A church or other organization should obtain a public-performance license before showing The Firing Squad to a congregation or group. A personal rental or digital purchase generally should not be described as automatic permission for a public showing.
The official licensing page lists one-year unlimited and permanent public-screening license options for organizations. The intended audience includes churches, schools, nonprofits, and prison ministries. Organizations planning a showing should review the current public screening license information and confirm the terms directly with the rights holder before advertising or hosting an event.
The film’s public performance licensing and screening guide also discusses licensing routes and references the film website, EpochTV, and Amazon Prime Video as viewing or licensing pathways. The guide is especially relevant to organizations that want to use The Firing Squad for a ministry, classroom, prison outreach, or community event.
What is The Firing Squad ending about?
Spoiler warning: The official campaign describes The Firing Squad as building toward a “stunning conclusion” in which the prisoners’ Christian witness affects the entire prison camp. The available sources support that broad thematic description, but they do not provide enough verified plot detail to summarize the ending responsibly without risking an invented or inaccurate spoiler.
Viewers looking for a detailed explanation of The Firing Squad ending should rely on a source that has actually reviewed or watched the complete film. This article limits the spoiler discussion to the official synopsis rather than presenting unsourced details as fact.

What kind of film is The Firing Squad?
The Firing Squad is best understood as a faith-based prison drama built around redemption, conversion, courage, and mortality. The film’s primary appeal is likely to viewers who want an explicitly Christian story about prisoners discovering or reaffirming faith under extreme circumstances.
Viewers who approach The Firing Squad expecting a conventional procedural account of an execution may find that the religious transformation is the central narrative purpose. That is a description of the film’s premise and campaign, not a claim about acting quality, pacing, cinematography, or audience impact; no first-hand viewing or formal performance evaluation was conducted for this article.
