The Tombstone Piledriver became one of the defining signatures of The Undertaker’s WWE character: WWE lists it among his signature moves and recounts it in pivotal matches from his early run through WrestleMania XIV. But WWE’s published history does not establish who invented the move, who named it, or when it was first used.
What the Tombstone meant to The Undertaker’s WWE character
WWE’s Undertaker profile identifies the Tombstone among his signature moves. That places it in the core of the character’s in-ring presentation, rather than treating it as an incidental maneuver. WWE dates his debut to Survivor Series 1990, when he appeared as the final member of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team; the profile does not say he performed the Tombstone that night.
How WWE’s key match histories use the move
Early appearances and the 1992 Casket Match
WWE’s history of Casket Matches describes opponents succumbing to the Tombstone during The Undertaker’s early run. It also recounts his match with Kamala at Survivor Series 1992, which WWE identifies as the first official Casket Match. Kamala could not avoid the Tombstone; after the pinfall, he was rolled into the coffin. WWE notes that the rules later changed so victory required trapping an opponent in the casket and closing the lid.
Three Tombstones against Kane at WrestleMania XIV
WWE’s history of The Brothers of Destruction says The Undertaker defeated Kane at WrestleMania XIV in 1998 after delivering three Tombstone Piledrivers. The retrospective calls the three-move sequence unprecedented. In this account, the Tombstone is not just part of the Undertaker’s presentation: it is the decisive finish in a major confrontation with Kane.

From a signature move to a lasting career marker
WWE says The Undertaker retired at Survivor Series on November 22, 2020, exactly 30 years after his debut at the same event. His profile continues to list the Tombstone as a signature move, linking it to the character’s long-running legacy. The documented milestones show how WWE used the move in different storytelling roles: as part of the early character’s threat, in the Casket Match against Kamala, and as the repeated finishing blow against Kane.
Who invented the Tombstone Piledriver?
The available WWE histories establish the move’s importance to The Undertaker’s career, but they do not identify its origin. They do not establish who first performed the Tombstone Piledriver, whether The Undertaker originated this variation, or who gave it its name. His 1990 WWE debut is not proof of the move’s first use. Claims that he invented the move or coined its name go beyond what these sources document.
