The Family McMullen is Edward Burns’s 2025 sequel to The Brothers McMullen (1995). Set about 30 years later, it brings back Barry, Patrick and Molly as the family’s romantic complications reach a new generation. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film for streaming on HBO Max; availability can vary by location and change over time.
What is The Family McMullen about?
Written and directed by Edward Burns, the ensemble comedy-drama follows Barry McMullen, now in his 50s, and his children in their 20s as they navigate romantic hurdles. Barry’s brother Patrick and widowed sister-in-law Molly are also part of the story. The setup connects the original family story to the next generation rather than introducing an unrelated McMullen family. Fathom Entertainment’s announcement describes the film as an ensemble comedy; Hulu’s listing gives a matching synopsis.

How does it connect to The Brothers McMullen?
The 1995 original introduced the McMullen family; this sequel revisits them roughly 30 years later. Burns returns as Barry, Michael McGlone as Patrick and Connie Britton as Molly. The passage of time shifts the focus toward Barry’s adult children as well as the continuing romantic lives of the older characters. Fathom’s announcement notes that The Brothers McMullen won the 1995 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize.
