Eleanor in the 2000 remake of Gone in 60 Seconds is a gray-and-black 1967 Ford Mustang portrayed in the film as a Shelby GT500. That on-screen identity is not the same as proof that the movie cars were built from authentic Shelby GT500s: the Gone Again project FAQ says they were not, with one exception later given to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The 1974 original had a different Eleanor—a yellow Mustang.

What car is Eleanor in the 2000 film?

In the 2000 remake, Eleanor is the codename for the gray-and-black 1967 Mustang Memphis Raines is tasked with stealing. The story identifies her as a Shelby GT500, and the court filing appendix describes the remake car as a Shelby GT-500 Ford Mustang. The film’s fictional identity and a vehicle’s documented real-world provenance are separate questions.

The court filing describes two versions used in the remake: the chased gray-and-black car and a rusty, stripped car given to Raines at the end. It also records that the underlying real-world identity of the cars was disputed. The Gone Again project FAQ says the film cars were not based on actual Shelby GT500s, except for one car later given to Jerry Bruckheimer. That production account comes from the project FAQ, not independently corroborated production documentation.

How is the 2000 Eleanor different from the original?

The 1974 Gone in 60 Seconds used a separate Eleanor: a yellow fastback Mustang with black stripes. Ford Media’s search-result excerpt distinguishes the 1974 film’s 1971 Mustang from the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 associated with the remake. The two cars belong to different films and should not be treated as one vehicle or one model year.

Who designed and built the remake cars?

According to the Gone Again FAQ, production designer Jeff Mann hired illustrator Steve Stanford to develop sketches, then hired Chip Foose to create clay and wood molds for the body parts. The FAQ credits Ray Claridge and the Cinema Vehicle Services team with building and maintaining the movie cars.

The same FAQ reports 13 cars in total: one prototype that was not used in the film, 11 movie cars, and one acquired by Jerry Bruckheimer for his collection. It says seven of the 11 movie cars survived filming. These are figures reported by the project FAQ.

Is a 1967 Mustang replica the same as a movie car?

No. A car described as an Eleanor replica may resemble the film car without having appeared in the production. A continuation build is another category again: it is a newly built car based on a donor vehicle, not an original film car. When comparing claims about a particular vehicle, check its documented history and what its paperwork actually certifies.

  • Original film vehicle: Look for evidence connecting that specific car to the production, rather than relying on its paint, bodywork, or seller’s label.
  • Replica: Treat it as a later recreation unless documentation establishes otherwise; the available sources do not provide independent specifications for ranking replica builders.
  • Continuation car: Gone Again describes a project using restored 1967 Mustang donor cars, built to order with planned modern components. The project says specifications may change and images may be illustrative.

What does Gone Again say about its continuation cars?

Gone Again describes a limited run of 25 built-to-order cars based on restored 1967 Mustang donor cars. Its project site names Total Control Products suspension and Wilwood brakes among planned modern components and says each car will come with an authenticity certificate and package. Those are the project’s stated plans, not independent inspection findings; its site warns that specifications may change. The available information does not establish current order availability, prices, or a basis for comparing market values.

Who owns the Eleanor name and image?

The official Gone in 60 Seconds franchise site states that the film and Eleanor are registered trademarks and that the Eleanor star-car character and image are owned by Denice Shakarian Halicki’s company and licensed through it. This is the rights holder’s published position. A vehicle’s resemblance to Eleanor does not, by itself, establish whether its construction, sale, or promotion is licensed; the sources here do not determine the legal status of any particular replica or use.
