Chanaaz Mangroe, who performs as Channii Monroe, sued music producer and songwriter The-Dream in federal court in California on June 4, 2024. Her civil complaint alleges rape, sexual battery and sex trafficking connected to promises of music-career opportunities. The-Dream has denied the allegations. A later ruling dismissed Mangroe’s claims against Sony Music Entertainment, but did not decide whether her allegations against The-Dream are true.
What does the lawsuit allege?
Mangroe’s complaint says she was born in the Netherlands and was seeking to develop as a performer when people associated with The-Dream contacted her about her music. According to Mangroe’s attorneys and the Associated Press, she says she met him in 2015 after being offered help with her career.

She alleges that promises of career advancement were used to gain control over her personal and professional life, and that the relationship involved coercive behavior, physical assaults and non-consensual sexual acts, including rape. The November 2025 court order summarizes her second amended complaint as alleging that The-Dream lured her into a violent and abusive sexual relationship by promising help securing recording and publishing contracts. These are allegations in a civil case, not findings that the events occurred.
Mangroe told the Associated Press: “What Dream did to me made it impossible to live the life I envisioned for myself and pursue my goals as a singer and songwriter.”

How has The-Dream responded?
The Associated Press reported that The-Dream called the allegations “untrue and defamatory.” He also said he opposed harassment and was offended and saddened by the accusations. His denial is his position; it is not a court finding about the truth of the claims.
What has happened in court?
Mangroe filed the case in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The original complaint named The-Dream, Contra Paris LLC and Epic Records, according to an announcement from Mangroe’s lawyers. The court’s later order recounts that Sony Music Entertainment (SME) was substituted for Epic in the case caption.

What did the Sony ruling decide—and what did it not decide?
The November 3, 2025 order addressed Sony’s motion to dismiss. It concluded that Mangroe’s amended allegations had not cured deficiencies in her pleaded theory that Sony knowingly participated in and benefited from a sex-trafficking venture, and that further amendment would be futile. The order’s description of those allegations is not a finding that they happened.
The dismissal was as to Sony. It did not adjudicate the truth of the allegations against The-Dream, and it should not be read as resolving the claims against The-Dream or Contra Paris. The order says those defendants answered the second amended complaint in May 2025.
