Its bleak folk-horror premise and Marcia Gay Harden’s presence have drawn some praise, while the critical picture is weighed down by complaints about slow pacing and an unfocused story. For viewers hoping the reunion alone will carry the film, expectations should be measured.
What is The Dreadful about?
Written and directed by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful follows Anne (Sophie Turner) and her mother-in-law, Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden), living a harsh, isolated life on society’s outskirts during the Wars of the Roses. Their fragile existence is disrupted when a man from Anne’s past returns. Apple TV’s U.S. synopsis adds a curse and a mysterious knight who threaten the women.
That setup puts the film in period Gothic and folk-horror territory: the historical setting supplies hardship and isolation, while the supernatural threat turns private vulnerability into a larger menace. It is not a Game of Thrones continuation. Turner and Kit Harington, who plays Jago, are reunited as cast members in a separate story.
Does the atmosphere overcome the story’s slow pace?
The film’s strongest critical case is its atmosphere: bleak medieval isolation and supernatural menace give it the ingredients for a brooding folk-horror experience. The difficulty, according to the cited reception, is that mood does not consistently become momentum. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes a film reaching for atmospheric medieval folk horror but settling into a plodding, unfocused story.

William Bibbiani’s February 27, 2026 review for TheWrap offers a related but more specific lens, calling the film an uneven riff on Kaneto Shindō’s 1964 Onibaba. He praises its palpable despair but criticizes its focus. That is Bibbiani’s interpretation, not evidence that The Dreadful is a direct adaptation. The comparison is useful for understanding the film’s bleak, survival-centered ambitions; it also points to the central risk for viewers: a grim mood can feel substantial without the story developing with equal force.
How do Turner, Harington, and Harden fare?
The casting is an obvious draw for viewers who remember Turner and Harington from Game of Thrones, but the reunion is a point of interest rather than a guarantee of chemistry or narrative payoff. Their roles here belong to a new ensemble and a different kind of story. Bibbiani calls the cast a mixed bag, so the reunion’s appeal should be weighed against the film’s broader concerns about focus.

Harden is the performer singled out most clearly in the cited responses. Bibbiani describes her as a scene-stealing presence, and some audience comments on Rotten Tomatoes also praise her. That makes Morwen a key point of interest, though praise for an individual performance does not resolve complaints about the film’s overall character development or pacing.
What do critics and audiences think?
In a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed October 7, 2026, The Dreadful had a 35% Tomatometer from 37 critic reviews and a 38% Popcornmeter from more than 50 audience ratings. Those platform aggregates can change and are not a substitute for a review of the film itself. The cited comments show a split in what viewers value: some praise the eerie atmosphere and Harden, while others object to the pacing or payoff. One audience comment asks why the film does not have better ratings, but a single comment cannot represent the audience as a whole.

Is The Dreadful worth watching?
It is most likely to interest viewers specifically seeking a somber period horror film, especially those drawn to isolated settings, Gothic menace, or Harden’s performance. The cast reunion is a legitimate curiosity, but it should not be mistaken for the film’s main promise. The reception suggests a notable gap between the appeal of the atmosphere and the effectiveness of the story that sustains it. If you need brisk pacing or a tightly focused plot from horror, the reported shortcomings are a reason for caution.
