The book was published on June 3, 2025, so it is no longer forthcoming. It turns Friedman’s encounters with dogs into stories and reflections on how dogs can change people’s lives.
What is This Dog Will Change Your Life about?
Friedman’s first narrative book draws on dogs he has known through his work and personal life: his own dogs, dogs belonging to friends and family, and dogs he met on the street while making The Dogist. PEOPLE described it as a collection of reflections on how dogs affect people’s lives. The publisher’s description frames its central idea as dogs making human lives better by making people better.

That is the book’s premise, not a scientific finding that dogs universally improve health or life outcomes. The focus is on the human stories and relationships Friedman has encountered.

Why Friedman wrote it
At a Library of Congress National Book Festival discussion listed by PBS on August 3, 2026, Friedman explained that years of listening to people had revealed recurring themes in how dogs affect their lives. He said: “I just had listened to so many people over the years and all these themes about how dogs change people’s lives, and it’s something everyone in this room probably feels, especially if you have a dog.”
The remark connects the new book to the conversations behind The Dogist: not only portraits of dogs, but the experiences people associate with them. PBS’s listing identifies Friedman as the creator of The Dogist and author of the book.
Rank #2
How it differs from Friedman’s earlier books
Friedman’s previous books, The Dogist: Photographic Encounters with 1,000 Dogs (2015) and The Dogist Puppies (2017), are photography collections. The first organizes dog portraits into themes; the second focuses on puppies. This Dog Will Change Your Life is distinct in emphasis: it centers on narrative reflections about dogs and people rather than a collection of portraits.
