The Disappearing Bathtub and Other Tales of the Titanic’s Decay

The Titanic’s bathtub has not been documented as lost. NOAA records show the cabin wall fallen away, rusticles on surrounding fixtures and a wreck deteriorating through biological, chemical and physical processes.

The Titanic’s famous bathtub has not been shown to have vanished. What NOAA’s records document is the changing cabin around it: the side of Captain Edward Smith’s cabin deteriorated and fell away, exposing the tub, pipes and faucets. A photograph from a 2003 expedition shows the bathtub amid rusticles growing over many of the room’s fixtures. The wreck is deteriorating, but the evidence supports a story of changing visibility and gradual decay—not a confirmed disappearance of the tub.

Is the Titanic’s captain’s bathtub gone?

NOAA’s Ocean Today transcript describes the cabin side as having “deteriorated and fallen away,” leaving “the bathtub, pipes, and faucets” plainly visible. A separate NOAA image record, credited to Lori Johnston of the RMS Titanic Expedition 2003, shows the tub and notes rusticles growing over most of the room’s pipes and fixtures. These records establish that the cabin’s condition changed and that the bathtub was visible in the 2003 image; they do not establish when—or whether—the tub itself was later lost.

“Disappearing bathtub” is therefore best understood as shorthand for a wreck whose familiar spaces and features are changing, becoming obscured or becoming less accessible as surrounding structure decays. The available NOAA records are historical documentation, not a current photographic inspection of the tub.

Why is the Titanic wreck deteriorating?

NOAA describes biological, chemical and physical processes affecting the wreck. Rusticles are one visible part of that story, but NOAA does not present them as the sole cause of decay or quantify how much each process contributes.

Process NOAA’s example What it means here
Biological Rusticle growth NOAA describes rusticles as bacterial communities that slowly consume the ship’s iron and give the wreck a melting appearance.
Chemical Electrolysis A chemical process NOAA includes among the factors affecting the site; the cited material does not assign it a share of total deterioration.
Physical Contact from underwater vehicles NOAA includes vehicle contact among physical impacts on the site; the cited material does not quantify its contribution.

In the Ocean Today transcript, the narrator says, “These formations are actually communities of bacteria that slowly eat away at the ship’s iron and give the shipwreck its melting appearance.” That explains why rusticles matter, while NOAA’s broader account makes clear that biological growth is only one of several kinds of deterioration.

How researchers documented the cabin

NOAA’s transcript says Robert Ballard located the wreckage in 1985 and returned “nearly 20 years later” with researchers to map the site and examine its deterioration. The transcript describes a remotely operated vehicle mission as “look, don’t touch”; high-definition cameras helped reveal subtle details such as the exposed cabin interior. The bathtub image is specifically credited to the RMS Titanic Expedition 2003. Those records show how the cabin was documented, but they should not be mistaken for a new assessment of its present condition.

How long will the Titanic wreck last?

NOAA’s Documents and References page says the hull and structure “may collapse to the ocean floor within the next 50 years, perhaps sooner,” based on available information about the rate of deterioration. This is a qualified projection, not a precise disappearance date or a guarantee that every section will collapse at once. The page’s publication date is not established in the cited material, so the statement should not be read as a newly issued forecast or a 2026 survey.

What protections apply to the wreck?

NOAA frames the site as a maritime memorial and notes that views differ on whether it is a grave site. The International Agreement Concerning the Shipwrecked Vessel RMS Titanic entered into force for the United States on November 18, 2019, according to NOAA’s Titanic overview. Under U.S. law, beginning with fiscal year 2017, people under U.S. jurisdiction may not physically alter or disturb the wreck or site without prior authorization under Section 113 and the Agreement. NOAA evaluates authorization requests against the law, the Agreement, its Annex Rules and NOAA Guidelines.

These limits govern qualifying human activity; they do not stop natural deterioration. NOAA says the Guidelines are intended to discourage activities that would accelerate the ship’s decay.

What is known about more recent visits?

On December 12, 2024, the Associated Press reported that RMS Titanic Inc. told a court it would not visit the wreck in 2025 and had not settled plans for further artifact recovery. AP described 2010 as the last salvage expedition. That report does not establish what visits, surveys, legal developments or plans may have occurred after it, so it cannot confirm a 2026 expedition schedule.
