In the final moments of Episode 8, Kate fears that Hal, her husband and the vice president, has double-crossed her with Grace Penn’s help. The discovery follows a brief renewal of intimacy between Kate and Hal. They have been able to work together amid the crisis, a dynamic Russell described to TheWrap as familiar and safe for Kate: “In that specific moment, the world is breaking down, and they are able to be at the center of it and work together to make it better.” The sudden shift from partnership to suspicion is what gives the reveal its personal force.
Why does the revelation hit Kate so hard?
Russell told TV Insider that Kate’s first reaction is shock, followed by the possibility that she is asking herself how she let herself become entangled with Hal again. Russell’s full answer keeps Kate’s response immediate rather than definitive: “At the initial point of impact, I think it’s just a gut punch, so I think it’s still figuring it out, but probably a lot, and that she’s let herself get wrapped up in it again, but who knows where it’s going to go from here? We’ll find out.”

That uncertainty matters. Russell does not predict Kate’s next move, and the finale does not settle whether she will treat Hal’s choice as a marital betrayal, a political threat, or both. How far ahead Hal was thinking also remains unclear; Russell told TV Insider that the extent of his betrayal depends on that question, calling the uncertainty “where the gray lies.”
Why is Poseidon a diplomatic crisis?
The show makes the political danger explicit through Kate’s warning to Hal: “When the Brits find out, they will consider this an act of war. So will the Russians.” The line is about the fictional consequences of the Poseidon plan within The Diplomat, not a statement about real-world policy. Kate is not on board with the secret decision, according to TheWrap’s account of the finale.

The personal and diplomatic ruptures echo one another. Creator Debora Cahn told Netflix Tudum that the season is “the split,” a phrase that applies both to the Wylers’ relationship and to the U.S.-U.K. relationship. Kate’s renewed connection with Hal makes the breach harder to separate from her judgment as a diplomat. Cahn described that ambivalence to TheWrap this way: “There’s something that Kate is wrestling, which is the thing that you want and the thing that you don’t want are the same thing.”
What has Keri Russell said about Hal’s choice?
The finale leaves motive open to interpretation. Russell’s comments focus on Kate’s possible feeling that she has been pulled back into a relationship that may now have compromised her trust. Rufus Sewell, who plays Hal, offers a different actor’s perspective on the choice: Hal faced consequences whichever way he acted, as discussed in the TV Insider interview. Neither interpretation establishes what Hal intended or how Kate will judge him.
