The Dinosaurs is now streaming on Netflix. The four-part natural-history documentary series covers roughly 165 million years of dinosaur history, from the earliest dinosaur lineages about 235 million years ago to the asteroid impact that ended the dominance of non-avian dinosaurs. Steven Spielberg is an executive producer—not the narrator or director—and Morgan Freeman provides the narration.
What is The Dinosaurs about?
The Dinosaurs is a four-episode Netflix documentary series about how dinosaurs emerged, diversified, adapted to changing environments, and ultimately faced extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. Its story begins in the Triassic, when early dinosaurs and their close relatives competed with other reptiles, and moves through the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras before reaching the asteroid-driven extinction event.

Netflix presents the series as a cinematic natural-history production rather than a conventional fossil-by-fossil lecture. The program uses computer-generated imagery and reconstructed animal behavior to place viewers inside prehistoric ecosystems. Amblin Entertainment and Amblin Documentaries produced the project with Silverback Films and the creative team associated with Life on Our Planet. Industrial Light & Magic contributed visual-effects work.
The Spielberg connection is real but should be described precisely: Spielberg is credited as an executive producer. Morgan Freeman narrates the series.

The Dinosaurs episode guide
| Episode | Period and focus | Approximate runtime |
|---|---|---|
| “Rise” | The Triassic emergence of dinosaurs and their early competitors | 48 minutes |
| “Conquest” | Jurassic diversification, giant herbivores, armor, and predators | 48 minutes |
| “Empire” | Cretaceous ecosystems, feathers, flight, high seas, and changing climates | 44 minutes |
| “Fall” | Late-Cretaceous ecosystems and the asteroid impact | 44 minutes |
1. “Rise”
The opening episode begins approximately 235 million years ago in the Triassic period. It introduces early dinosaur relatives and competitors, including Marasuchus and rhynchosaurs, before turning to early dinosaurs such as Plateosaurus and Liliensternus.
The episode’s larger question is why dinosaurs eventually became so successful when they began as only one group among many competing reptiles. It depicts a world recovering from environmental upheaval and shows how anatomy, movement, feeding strategies, and competition shaped the first stages of the dinosaur story.
2. “Conquest”
“Conquest” moves into the Jurassic period, after a major extinction event reshaped ecosystems. Dinosaurs expand into new ecological roles, including enormous herbivores and heavily armored animals. Stegosaurus and Dilophosaurus are among the featured animals.
The episode emphasizes diversification rather than treating the Jurassic as a single landscape dominated by one type of dinosaur. Different body plans and feeding strategies allowed herbivores and predators to coexist and compete in increasingly complex ecosystems.

The third episode enters the Cretaceous, a period marked by changing climates, rising seas, and major evolutionary developments. Netflix’s materials highlight feathered dinosaurs, the origins and expansion of flight, pterosaurs, and the semi-aquatic predator Spinosaurus.
“Empire” also broadens the setting beyond land. Pterosaurs and marine reptiles appear in the series, but neither group is technically a dinosaur. They were important parts of prehistoric ecosystems and are included to show the wider world in which dinosaurs lived.
4. “Fall”
The finale follows late-Cretaceous ecosystems before and after the asteroid impact associated with the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Its featured animals include Tyrannosaurus rex, Ankylosaurus, pachycephalosaurs, marine reptiles, and other late survivors.
The episode is about more than the impact itself. It establishes the ecological communities that existed immediately beforehand, then follows the collapse that ended the reign of non-avian dinosaurs. Birds—the surviving avian dinosaurs—are not erased from the evolutionary story, so “the end of the dinosaurs” here means the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs, not every dinosaur lineage.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How scientifically accurate is the series?
The Dinosaurs is best understood as a science-informed natural-history documentary with dramatized reconstructions. Silverback Films describes extensive scientific consultation, the use of recent discoveries, and state-of-the-art visual effects. Those are strong reasons to view the program as an effort to reflect current paleontological thinking, but they do not mean that every behavior shown on screen is directly proven.
Fossils can provide evidence about anatomy, growth, injuries, locomotion, diet, feathers, nests, trackways, and sometimes social behavior. They rarely provide a complete recording of a particular hunt, courtship display, parenting decision, or predator-prey encounter. The series therefore has to infer and visualize much of what happened.

When describing dramatic scenes, the careful distinction is:
- Evidence-based: the animal’s known anatomy, the rocks and fossils associated with its time and place, and behaviors supported by multiple lines of evidence.
- Scientific reconstruction: a plausible interpretation of how an animal may have moved, hunted, nested, communicated, or interacted.
- Dramatic presentation: the specific encounter, pacing, camera angle, color, sound, or emotional storyline created for the documentary.
That distinction does not make the reconstructions meaningless. It helps viewers understand what paleontology can establish confidently and where researchers are making informed inferences. The series presents animals as living creatures shaped by parenting, environmental change, survival pressure, and ecological competition—not simply as movie monsters.
Are all the animals in it dinosaurs?
No. The series includes dinosaurs alongside other prehistoric animals. Rhynchosaurs, pterosaurs, and marine reptiles are specifically identified in Netflix’s material as non-dinosaurs.
This matters because “prehistoric reptile” and “dinosaur” are not interchangeable terms. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles, while marine reptiles belonged to several different lineages that lived in the oceans. They shared prehistoric ecosystems with dinosaurs, but they were not dinosaurs themselves. The series’ broader approach is useful because it shows that dinosaur evolution happened within a much larger web of life.
Is The Dinosaurs suitable for children?
Netflix classifies the series TV-PG and presents it as informative family viewing. However, it includes predation, peril, animal deaths, gore, hatchling attacks, jump scares, and the asteroid-impact extinction sequence. Netflix warns that some moments may be frightening for children under six.

For many school-age children who already enjoy nature documentaries, the series may work well with an adult nearby. Parents should consider co-viewing or previewing it if a child is sensitive to animals being hunted, injured, or killed, or to disaster scenes. The TV rating alone does not indicate how an individual child will respond to the more intense sequences.

Netflix Tudum links to an official The Dinosaurs activity guide for children ages 6–10. It is a free digital PDF rather than a physical product, and it gives families a screen-free way to continue exploring the animals and time periods introduced in the series.
For more screen-free follow-up, look for a dinosaur activity book for kids. A general activity book should not be presented as official Netflix merchandise, but it can complement the series with puzzles, coloring, matching exercises, vocabulary, and age-appropriate dinosaur facts.
Older children and adults may prefer a dinosaur encyclopedia or a reputable natural-history book that explains the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods in more detail. A fossil excavation kit can also provide a hands-on activity, but parents should check the product’s recommended age, tool safety, small-parts warnings, and whether the kit teaches paleontology responsibly rather than promising an actual dinosaur discovery.

What makes the series different from a dinosaur movie?
The Dinosaurs uses the visual language of a wildlife documentary. Instead of building its story around a fictional human cast, it follows prehistoric animals and ecosystems across deep time. The four-episode structure also gives it room to show evolutionary change: dinosaurs begin as relatively early competitors, expand during the Jurassic, diversify further in the Cretaceous, and then face a planetary crisis.

That format also explains why the program can feel dramatic while remaining educational. Individual scenes are reconstructed, but the broader arc—Triassic origins, Jurassic expansion, Cretaceous diversification, and the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs—is grounded in the geological and fossil record.
