The dementia idea is an online fan theory sparked by a moment in The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer when Miranda Priestly seems not to recognize Andy Sachs. Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna later explained that Miranda’s memory returns as they interact; she described the dementia speculation as “a funny internet moment,” not as the film’s explanation.
Why did the trailer prompt a dementia theory?
The trailer shows Miranda encountering Andy after many years apart and initially failing to recognize her. That brief, ambiguous moment led some viewers to ask whether the sequel was about Miranda having dementia. The trailer alone does not establish a diagnosis or explain why Miranda does not recognize Andy.

What did the screenwriter say about Miranda’s memory?
In an interview with Marie Claire, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna addressed the scene directly: “She does not recognize her. I think what happens is as she’s interacting with her, bells start to ring.” McKenna said Miranda gradually remembers Andy, including that she thought Andy was smart. She also called the online dementia speculation “a funny internet moment.”
That is the writer’s explanation of this story beat: Miranda’s recognition develops during the conversation. The interview does not present dementia as Miranda’s diagnosis or the sequel’s confirmed plot.

What is the sequel about instead?
McKenna describes the story as unfolding in a changed media and business environment, where corporate forces challenge Miranda’s power and threaten Runway. Andy returns to the magazine as a features writer after a public-relations crisis involving Miranda, and the two find common ground as they face those pressures. The interview’s account points to workplace and industry conflict, not a dementia storyline.
