Footage from The CW’s canceled live-action Powerpuff pilot surfaced online on March 6, 2025. Posts called it a trailer, but TheWrap and A.V. Club reported that it was footage from the filmed pilot assembled into a video—not an official trailer. The CW never ordered the project to series, and in 2023 the network said it had stopped developing it.
Was the online video an official Powerpuff Girls trailer?
No. TheWrap reported that there was no official pilot trailer and described the circulating video as an apparent fan-made collection of scenes. A.V. Club also said it could confirm the clips came from the pilot, while stressing that the trailer itself was not real. “Trailer” is therefore shorthand used in online posts, not an accurate description of an authorized preview.
The footage came from the unaired pilot for Powerpuff, The CW’s live-action take on the animated franchise. The reports establish the footage’s connection to that pilot; they do not establish an authorized place to watch the complete pilot or a commercial release.
What happened to The CW’s live-action Powerpuff pilot?
The project reached filming, but not a series order
The CW project was reported in development in 2020 and received a pilot order in early 2021 under the title Powerpuff, according to ComicBook.com’s timeline. The pilot was filmed in early 2021, but the network did not pick it up to series, TVLine reported in 2023.

The CW’s first stated concern was tone
In May 2021, then-network president Mark Pedowitz described the pilot as a “miss.” He said it might have felt “a little too campy” and not as grounded in reality as the network wanted, and said the project would return to the drawing board. These were Pedowitz’s comments about the network’s creative assessment, not evidence of a universal audience reaction. TVLine reported his remarks.
The CW ended its development in 2023
In May 2023, The CW confirmed it was no longer redeveloping Powerpuff. Brad Schwartz, the network’s president of entertainment, said the projects had been returned to their studios and were free to be developed and sold elsewhere. That means The CW stopped working on the project; it does not mean the rights were permanently abandoned. TVLine reported Schwartz’s statement.

Who was cast in the Powerpuff pilot?
The announced leads were Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Donald Faison played Professor “Drake” Utonium. TheWrap identified Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody as writers. TheWrap’s report on the surfaced footage includes the cast and creative-team details.

There were two distinct stages: the network chose not to take the filmed 2021 pilot forward, then later stopped redeveloping the project altogether. Pedowitz’s 2021 explanation focused on the pilot’s tone and how grounded it felt. The CW’s 2023 announcement established that the network had returned the project to its studio, not a new creative verdict on the leaked clips.

TheWrap connected the 2023 decision to Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW, while also placing it in the context of changes at the network. That is reported context, not proof that the acquisition alone caused Powerpuff to end at The CW. TheWrap’s account discusses the connection.
