Curtis and Viper is a fictional action-film series in The Last of Us. In Season 2, Dina uses its name to tease Ellie about her heavily armed appearance, then the pair turn the reference into a running joke. The callback also reaches back to The Last of Us Part II, where Ellie plans to watch Curtis and Viper 2 with Joel.
What is Curtis and Viper?
Curtis and Viper is an in-universe film franchise, not a real series of movies viewers can watch. Its appearances in the show and game build out the characters’ shared history rather than introduce a separate film people can find or stream.

Why does Dina compare Ellie to Curtis and Viper?
In the Season 2 premiere, Dina sees Ellie carrying substantial gear and says she looks like “Curtis and Viper,” adding that Joel likes those films. The joke compares Ellie’s armed, action-hero-like appearance to the fictional movies Joel enjoys.
What does the reference have to do with Joel?
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie tells Dina she plans to watch Curtis and Viper 2 with Joel. That earlier detail connects the show’s joke to Joel’s taste in movies and to Ellie’s plan to share a movie night with him. Read alongside their story, the callback can feel bittersweet; that emotional effect is an interpretation of the context, not a confirmed explanation from the creators.

How does Season 2, episode 3 reuse the joke?
As Ellie and Dina travel together, Dina asks, “Curtis or Viper?” Ellie answers, “Both, in all four movies.” Later, Ellie repeats “Curtis or Viper?” while trying to sound tough, and Dina tells her, “You don’t need to try.”
The exchange shifts the reference from a joke about Joel’s favorite films into playful shorthand between Ellie and Dina: it recalls the earlier conversation while showing their growing rapport.
