Spoilers for Outlander Season 7, Episode 16. The Season 7 finale, “A Hundred Thousand Angels,” ends without proving that Claire and Jamie’s daughter Faith survived. Claire finds clues that connect Faith to Fanny’s family, then tells Jamie, “I think our daughter lived.” The episode cuts away before confirming her theory.
What happens in the Season 7 finale?
While Claire recovers from a dangerous operation, she believes she sees Master Raymond, the apothecary who helped her after Faith’s birth in Paris. Jamie says no one else was there. The encounter remains uncertain, but it turns Claire’s thoughts back to the daughter she and Jamie believe was stillborn. TVLine’s recap and TV Insider’s finale coverage describe the clues that follow.
Elsewhere, William asks Jamie to help rescue Jane, who is imprisoned after killing Harkness. Their attempt fails: Jane dies before they can reach her. William and Jamie get away, and Jamie brings Jane’s younger sister, Fanny, into his and Claire’s care.
Why does Claire think Faith may have lived?
Claire recognizes the song Fanny sings—“Oh I Do Like to Sing Beside the Seaside”—as one she sang to Faith. Fanny says her mother taught it to her. Claire also finds a locket among Jane’s belongings bearing the name Faith. She puts the song and locket together and tells Jamie, “I think our daughter lived.”

- The American Revolution has arrived, and the Frasers must navigate the perils of war to protect what they have built. They learn that sometimes to defend what you love, you have to leave it behind. As the conflict draws them into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie and Claire are faced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
Those details are presented as clues, not a complete explanation of Fanny’s family history. The finale does not show Faith alive or establish who the locket belonged to. Claire’s conclusion opens a mystery; it does not settle it.
What the ending confirms—and what it leaves unresolved
- Before these clues: Claire and Jamie understand Faith to have been stillborn after Claire’s Season 2 birth in Paris.
- What Claire finds: Fanny knows a song Claire sang to Faith, and a locket among Jane’s belongings bears Faith’s name.
- What Claire concludes: She believes their daughter may have lived.
- What the episode does not confirm: It does not show Faith alive or explain the full connection between Faith, Fanny, and the locket.
What happens between William, Jamie, and Fanny?
William turns to Jamie after his effort to save Jane runs into obstacles. Actor Charles Vandervaart told TV Insider that William initially approaches Jamie “out of desperation” because he feels responsible for failing Jane. The rescue attempt brings William and Jamie together, but their relationship remains tense: William also questions Jamie about his relationship with William’s mother, Geneva. By leaving Fanny with Jamie and Claire, William entrusts her to their care even as the conflict between father and son remains unresolved.

Why the finale is a season cliffhanger
When the second half of Season 7 was announced, the Associated Press reported that Jamie and Claire would return to Scotland before the Revolutionary War drew them back to America. The AP also described Season 8 as the show’s final season. That November 2024 context makes clear why Episode 16 functions as a season-ending cliffhanger rather than a series conclusion; it is not a current release or availability update. The Associated Press covered the show’s concluding seasons.
