How does “Alone” fit into Songs of a Lost World?
“Alone” is both the album’s opening track and the first single from it. The Cure announced Songs of a Lost World for November 1, 2024, and later confirmed its release. The band called the record “16 years in the making,” a description of its own framing; the album followed 2008’s 4:13 Dream. The Cure identified it as their 14th studio album.
Universal Music Canada said “Alone” opened every show on the band’s 90-date, 33-country Shows of a Lost World tour. That same label announcement said the tour previewed songs from the album and reached more than 1.3 million people; those figures are the label’s reporting. Universal Music Canada’s release announcement also gives the album credits and Smith’s account of the song.

What did Robert Smith say inspired “Alone”?
Smith described “Alone” as the piece that made the album come together: “It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus.”
He said he had struggled to find the right opening line and kept the idea of being alone in mind. After the music was recorded, he remembered Ernest Dowson’s poem “Dregs.” Smith said that recollection was when he knew the song and album were real. These are Smith’s own explanations of the writing process, rather than a separate interpretation of the lyrics.
