As Eric Draven, a musician who returns from the dead to avenge the murder of himself and his fiancée, Lee gives the film its emotional center: a performance that makes the revenge story feel like grief made visible. Alex Proyas’s adaptation of James O’Barr’s graphic novel surrounds him with a gothic, noir-inflected world, but Lee is what makes it linger.
What is The Crow about?
Directed by Alex Proyas, the 1994 film follows Eric Draven, a musician murdered alongside his fiancée on the eve of their wedding. Draven returns from the dead and sets out after those responsible. Miramax calls it “the tale of a young musician Eric Draven who, along with his fiancé, is murdered on the eve of their Halloween wedding.” The story is adapted from James O’Barr’s graphic novel.
The premise gives the film a supernatural-revenge framework, but its emotional stakes are intimate: Draven’s violence is bound to loss, and the possibility of love and tenderness remains present even in a world defined by brutality.
Why Brandon Lee’s performance stays with the film
Lee plays Draven as both a figure of menace and a man still shaped by the life he lost. That tension keeps the character from becoming only a collection of dark imagery or revenge beats. His physicality suits the role’s force, while its quieter emotional dimension gives the violence a source and a cost.

Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, Bai Ling, and David Patrick Kelly are among the cast. The film’s ensemble helps populate Draven’s bleak surroundings, but the experience is organized around Lee’s presence. The character’s grief is the thread connecting the supernatural premise, the pursuit of revenge, and the film’s visual style.
A gothic revenge story with noir atmosphere
Proyas builds a stylized city of shadow, decay, and heightened contrasts rather than aiming for naturalism. Criterion Channel describes the movie as “seductively grungy” and praises its “sleek noir world-building.” Those are Criterion’s critical descriptions, but they capture the deliberate combination of rough-edged texture and carefully shaped atmosphere that distinguishes the film.

The setting is not just decoration: its darkness gives the story a coherent visual language. The film’s look can be more compelling than realistic, and its heightened mood is part of its appeal. Viewers seeking restrained drama or a grounded crime story may find the stylization and bloody violence less inviting.
How the film was made and released
Alex Proyas directed The Crow; Edward R. Pressman and Jeff Most produced it, David J. Schow and John Shirley wrote the screenplay, Dariusz Wolski was cinematographer, and Graeme Revell composed the music. These credits help explain the film’s distinct combination of visual atmosphere and musical mood.

Is The Crow worth watching?
Yes, if you want a stylized supernatural revenge film whose atmosphere serves an emotional story—and especially if you are interested in Lee’s performance. Its appeal rests less on realism than on the fusion of grief, gothic imagery, noir mood, and a lead actor who gives the central character both fury and vulnerability. The graphic violence and heightened style are significant parts of the experience, not incidental details.
