I stepped inside, picked six films, and had three minutes to explain why they mattered to me. The result was a fast, generous little celebration of film—and one that was over almost as soon as it began.
What the Criterion Mobile Closet was like at TIFF
The Criterion Mobile Closet took the familiar Closet Picks format out of its usual setting and brought it to the public: visitors browsed a truck full of films, chose titles, and recorded a short video about why those films mattered to them. TorontoToday reported that the truck held more than 1,700 physical films; that was the publication’s reported count, not an independently audited inventory. TorontoToday’s event report covered the Toronto stop, which ran September 4–7, 2025.
Criterion described the collection in its announcement, reproduced by TorontoToday: “Stocked with more than 1,700 of the greatest films from around the world, the Criterion Collection Closet may offer more cinematic inspiration per square foot than any other place on the planet.” The scale made browsing part of the fun: familiar favorites sat alongside possibilities you might not have thought to choose.
Three minutes to make your picks
For my recording, I had three minutes to talk about my choices. With that little time, it helps to decide what you want to select before stepping inside. I did, and staff could help locate the films quickly rather than spending the visit searching shelves. The short recording window gives the experience its energy, but it also means there is not much room to improvise a long list or explanation.

There was also a special 40% discount on up to three films. Those were details of this 2025 Toronto event, not standing benefits or a promise about future stops. My account of the visit for MobileSyrup describes the recording time and the on-site details.
The six films I picked
I chose six films that show how far my own idea of a great movie can travel—from Japanese crime drama and Hong Kong romance to Canadian body horror and Korean mystery.

- Mulholland Drive — David Lynch’s surreal mystery.

- Memories of Murder — Bong Joon-ho’s South Korean crime drama.
The six titles are my selections from the visit, not a claim that every film currently has a Criterion disc edition or is in stock at a particular retailer. The pleasure was in having the shelves—and the short time to choose—turn personal favorites into a quick portrait of what I love watching.

The Mobile Closet’s Toronto appearance was a four-day TIFF event in September 2025, not a permanent installation. TIFF’s Criterion shop pop-up followed later, running November 18–December 31, 2025; the TIFF Shop’s Criterion page now marks that pop-up as closed. The Closet visit remains a snapshot of a particular festival moment, rather than an event readers can still attend.
