Spoilers throughout. Miller’s Girl shows Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) and her English teacher, Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman), kiss in the rain. It does not confirm that they have sex. The more explicit encounter appears in a story Cairo writes, and the film leaves open how much of that story reflects events beyond the kiss.
What happens at the end of Miller’s Girl?
After Cairo and Jonathan’s relationship grows increasingly personal and troubling, Jonathan returns her misplaced phone. They meet in the rain and kiss; the film then cuts away. Cairo later writes a story that appears to draw on their relationship and depicts a more explicit sexual encounter. When Jonathan reads it, the film overlays his reading with images of the story.
Those images do not independently establish that the sexual encounter happened. The on-screen evidence and the written account are distinct: the kiss is shown, while the explicit material belongs to Cairo’s story. The film does not settle whether that writing records, embellishes, or invents events beyond the kiss. A What to Watch ending explainer likewise reads the kiss as real and the explicit sequence as part of Cairo’s story, but that is an interpretation, not a definitive confirmation from the film.
Did Cairo and Miller have sex?
The film does not confirm that they did. It shows them kissing, then presents the more explicit encounter through Cairo’s written story and its visualization. It also does not conclusively establish that her account is false. The careful answer is that viewers see a kiss, read a story depicting more, and are left to decide how closely the story tracks what happened.

Is the ending supposed to be ambiguous?
Yes. In a January 26, 2024 Moviefone interview, writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett said she wanted to leave viewers with a question rather than “tie it up in a bow.” She said she wanted the audience to ask who Cairo and Jonathan become and to examine its judgments of them. Her explanation supports an intentionally unresolved ending; it does not establish that the pair reconcile, that sex occurred, or that the final moments resolve the consequences of their relationship.
Bartlett also described how the film’s camera perspective shifts with Cairo’s changing view of Jonathan: he is shot from below when she idealizes him, and from above after he humiliates and shames her. She called her heartbreak a “great turn” and said Jonathan’s inability to see his responsibility is frightening. That account points toward a change in Cairo’s understanding, not a straightforward romantic payoff.

Why is the ending controversial?
The relationship has a built-in power imbalance
Cairo is a high school student; Jonathan is her English teacher. Netflix’s official feature on the film describes a writing exercise about age and sex in teacher–student affairs that “becomes all too real.” The Associated Press review identifies Cairo as 18, but her age does not erase Jonathan’s professional responsibility or the imbalance in their roles.
The film resists a simple victim-and-villain reading
Bartlett has said she did not want a perfect victim and a perfect villain. In her Moviefone interview, she said the characters do not fit neatly into either category. She also described reconsidering Jonathan’s role when adapting the story from a play into a screenplay after the #MeToo period. That describes the filmmaker’s intended framing; it does not make the characters equally powerful or equally responsible. Bartlett specifically called Jonathan’s failure to recognize his responsibility frightening.

Critics questioned whether the ambiguity clarifies the power dynamics
In its January 24, 2024 review, Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy questioned the film’s ambiguity and argued that its treatment of power and women’s credibility could leave its intended meaning unclear. That is Kennedy’s assessment, not a settled consensus. It helps explain why viewers may disagree about whether the ending’s uncertainty deepens the story or obscures its stakes.

The ending leaves the truth of Cairo’s written account beyond the kiss unsettled, as well as the characters’ next steps. Its clearest emphasis is the shift in how Cairo—and, by extension, the audience—may see Jonathan. The film asks viewers to make judgments without supplying a final ruling on every event or consequence.
