Directed by Michael Chaves, it returns Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga to the roles of the paranormal investigators while shifting much of the emotional focus to their daughter, Judy Warren.
The film draws on the reported 1986 Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania, but it should not be treated as a documentary or a verified reconstruction of events. Like the earlier Warren films, it uses alleged paranormal incidents as the foundation for a fictionalized studio horror story.
What is The Conjuring: Last Rites about?
The main narrative takes place in 1986 in Pittston, Pennsylvania. The Smurl family becomes associated with a disturbing haunting after an ominous mirror enters their home. Their experiences eventually bring them into contact with Ed and Lorraine Warren, who have largely withdrawn from investigations because Ed is suffering from a serious heart condition.
A 1964 prologue establishes the mirror’s history and connects it to a traumatic event surrounding the birth of Judy Warren. The story then jumps forward more than two decades, making the Warren family itself part of the danger rather than treating the case as an isolated investigation.

- Runtime: 137 minutes
The “last rites” title points to the film’s central dramatic idea: Ed and Lorraine are confronting what is presented as their final major case. That framing gives the movie a more explicitly closing-chapter structure than a routine sequel, although it does not mean the wider Conjuring franchise has ended.

Is it based on a true story?
The Conjuring: Last Rites is inspired by reports surrounding the Smurl family haunting, which became widely known in the 1980s. The film’s connection to that case is a starting point, not a guarantee of historical accuracy.

Characters, chronology, supernatural events, and relationships are shaped for a feature-film narrative. The underlying haunting has not been established as a verified paranormal event, and the movie is not a documentary, investigative report, or factual account. “Based on true events” is best understood here as a description of the franchise’s source material and marketing approach.

The movie is the fourth mainline film focused on Ed and Lorraine Warren, which is why it is often called The Conjuring 4. In the broader theatrical franchise, however, it is the ninth entry in The Conjuring Universe, alongside related films such as Annabelle, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona.
Warner Bros. presented the film as the concluding chapter of the Warrens’ story and promoted it as their “one last case.” That does not make it the final Conjuring production. A new prequel film has entered development, and an HBO Max television series set in the same universe is also in development.
