Spoilers ahead for The Conjuring: Last Rites. The film ends its immediate mirror-centered case with Ed, Lorraine, and Judy facing the threat together. Judy and Tony’s wedding then shifts the focus from the haunting to the Warren family, giving Ed and Lorraine a hopeful farewell as parents. That closes the Warren-led story portrayed in this film, but it does not rule out future spin-offs.
What happens at the end of The Conjuring: Last Rites?
The film ties the Smurl family’s haunting to a mirror that appeared in the Warrens’ past. Its opening returns to 1964, when Ed and Lorraine encounter the mirror before Judy is born. The Associated Press describes it as the story’s central evil object and frames the film as a blend of the Warrens’ family story and the Smurl possession plot. The AP review supports that broad framing; the supernatural events are the movie’s fiction, not established facts about the real Smurl family.
In the film’s climax, Lorraine recognizes that the spirits involved are a front for a deeper danger tied to the mirror. Judy becomes possessed, and Ed, Lorraine, and Judy confront the mirror together. Their response contains the threat, and the mirror is placed among the Warrens’ haunted artifacts. These specific mechanics are described in a spoiler recap; they should be understood as the film’s plot, not as a verified account of paranormal events.
Does Judy survive?
Yes. Judy is part of the final confrontation and survives the events depicted. Afterward, she marries Tony. The wedding is more than a celebratory epilogue: it places Judy’s future at the center of the ending and gives Ed and Lorraine a family milestone beyond their work as paranormal investigators.

What does the mirror mean?
On the plot level, the mirror links the opening encounter to the later Smurl case, making the haunting feel like a threat carried forward from the Warrens’ history rather than an isolated event. Its final placement among their artifacts closes this film’s immediate conflict without suggesting that the object’s danger was a documented historical reality.
On the emotional level, the mirror is the crisis the family must face together before Judy begins an independent life with Tony. Director Michael Chaves said in a September 4, 2025 interview that the film was designed as a family story and that Judy’s wedding works as a metaphor for parents saying goodbye to their daughter. Chaves’s interview with We Live Entertainment explains that intention.

Why does the film end with a wedding?
At the reception, Lorraine shares a hopeful vision of herself and Ed growing old and becoming grandparents. The AP review independently notes the wedding and hopeful ending; the more specific vision is described in the spoiler recap. Together, the wedding and vision turn the final scene toward ordinary family life instead of another case. The Warrens’ story ends here through their relationship with Judy, not through a declaration that the supernatural world has disappeared.
Is The Conjuring: Last Rites really the last Conjuring movie?
It is presented as a final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren as portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, not as proof that every story in the wider franchise is over. In the September 4, 2025 interview, Chaves said: “This really was designed to be a final chapter, and I think in terms of, you know, spin-offs, or, you know, all of that, that stuff, the door is open.”

Producer James Wan offered a different but compatible explanation for ending the Warren-led run. In an interview published by CNA, he said: “We don’t want to be doing this 20 movies down the line, where we’ve driven the franchise into the ground. We love the idea that we’re going out with a big bang whilst everyone’s still loving the world, loving the movies, and loving the characters. It just feels right.” Neither statement guarantees that another film will be made or rules one out; they distinguish the Warrens’ farewell from the possibility of spin-offs.
