Yes. The Academy’s official record lists Brando as the Best Actor winner for The Godfather at the 45th Academy Awards, held on March 27, 1973, at Los Angeles’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The ceremony honored films released in 1972. Brando did not go onstage to accept; the Academy lists Littlefeather as appearing for the Best Actor winner.

The protest was not only about how Native people were portrayed on screen. Littlefeather’s remarks also brought a current Indigenous rights protest into an internationally visible entertainment ceremony. TIME’s account of the Wounded Knee occupation places it in its own political history and describes how it brought Indigenous rights issues before a wider public. Wounded Knee should be understood as a protest with its own aims, not merely as background to a celebrity story.

The Academy’s available accounts summarize the refusal and its themes; they do not establish a complete, authenticated transcript of Brando’s prepared text. A circulating version should not be presented as his definitive full statement without separate verification.

The Academy Museum says Littlefeather faced professional boycotting, personal attacks, harassment and discrimination after appearing at the ceremony. In a letter dated June 18, 2022, Academy President David Rubin apologized on behalf of the Academy, writing, “The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified.” He added, “For this, we offer both our deepest apologies and our sincere admiration.”

The Academy Museum’s account also quotes Littlefeather responding to the apology and a planned museum event: “We are so patient people—and it’s only been 50 years.” This was her response to the later apology, not a line from her 1973 Oscar remarks. The apology came nearly five decades after the ceremony; it acknowledged the harm she endured, but does not undo it.
