For the eight Ethan Hunt films, watch Mission: Impossible in release order, from the 1996 original to The Final Reckoning (2025). That is the clearest, officially documented viewing sequence. It is not a scene-by-scene in-universe calendar: the available official guide does not assign definitive dates to every mission.
What order should I watch the Mission: Impossible movies in?
Watch the films in this order. Paramount+’s guide, published January 8, 2026, presents the series this way, preserving the intended progression of reveals, returning characters, and callbacks.
- Mission: Impossible (1996) — Brian De Palma’s film introduces Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an IMF agent framed after his team is killed.
- Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) — Ethan teams with Nyah Hall to stop renegade agent Sean Ambrose.
- Mission: Impossible III (2006) — Ethan returns to active duty and faces arms dealer Owen Davian, whose plans put Julia in danger.
- Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) — After the IMF is implicated in a Kremlin bombing, Ethan and his team go rogue.
- Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) — With the IMF shut down by the CIA, Ethan and his team pursue the Syndicate.
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) — Ethan’s choice to save his team puts nuclear weapons at risk; the team works with CIA agent August Walker.
- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023) — Ethan’s team pursues a powerful weapon that threatens humanity. Paramount’s current guide uses this title for the released film; earlier marketing called it Dead Reckoning Part One.
- Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) — The eighth film picks up after Dead Reckoning and draws together elements from earlier entries.
Paramount+’s official film guide provides the order and these story descriptions. The direct connection between the final two films makes watching them consecutively particularly useful.
Is this the in-universe timeline?
No definitive, scene-by-scene calendar for all the films is established by the official guide. Release order is a documented, practical watch order; assigning fictional mission years or rearranging films based on guesses would imply a precision the available sources do not provide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The films’ continuity also changes in feel. The Atlantic’s 2025 critical essay describes the early entries as comparatively stand-alone and the later films as more continuity-driven. That is a critic’s interpretation, not an official canon ruling. The official guide does explicitly frame The Final Reckoning as tying together earlier elements.
Where do the TV series fit?
The original Mission: Impossible television series ran from 1966 to 1973. The Television Academy’s cast listing identifies Daniel Briggs in 1966–67 and James Phelps in 1967–73; it also documents a revival that followed the 1988 writers’ strike.

These shows are part of the franchise’s history and source material, but the cited official history does not set out a unified in-universe chronology connecting both series to the Ethan Hunt films. Treat their broadcast history separately rather than inserting them into the movie watch order as if an official shared timeline were settled.
The Television Academy’s history page attributes this observation to creator Bruce Geller: “Nothing is new except in how it’s done.”

How the films’ continuity develops
- Early entries: They can feel more self-contained, though watching in release order still lets you follow the franchise as audiences encountered it.
- Institutional through-line: Ghost Protocol establishes the IMF’s crisis after the Kremlin bombing, and Rogue Nation begins with the agency shut down by the CIA.
- More connected later films: The Final Reckoning follows Dead Reckoning directly, while the official guide says it brings together elements from previous films.
