The Color Purple (2023) is a musical drama directed by Blitz Bazawule, adapted from Alice Walker’s novel and the Broadway musical. It is not simply a remake of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film: the stage musical is a central part of this version’s identity. Here’s what to know about its story, cast, serious themes and how to check viewing options in your region.
What is The Color Purple (2023) about?
The film follows Celie across decades as she struggles toward independence. Her relationships with other women, including the bonds of sisterhood, help her find strength and hope. The story addresses abuse and violence, so its musical form does not make it light viewing.

The film is rated PG-13 for mature thematic content, sexual content, violence and language, according to the Associated Press. The AP reports a runtime of 140 minutes; Apple TV lists 2 hours 21 minutes. Check your local listing for the runtime shown in your region.
Is the 2023 film a remake of the 1985 movie?
Not in the usual sense of a direct remake. Both films adapt Alice Walker’s novel, but the 2023 film also draws on the Broadway musical. Its screenplay is by Marcus Gardley. The musical’s book was written by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, according to Warner Bros. materials.
#1 Best Overall
The 1985 film, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a separate adaptation of Walker’s novel. Amblin’s film page notes that it received 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The shared source material connects the two movies, but the musical lineage gives the 2023 film a distinct route into the story.
For readers who want to explore the story’s source, Alice Walker’s novel, The Color Purple, is an optional next read. Check the edition and format available from your bookseller.

How was the film received?
In his December 21, 2023 review for the Associated Press, movie reviewer Jake Coyle praised the performances, writing: “Exuberant performances from a cast led by Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks breathe life into Blitz Bazawule’s stirring ‘The Color Purple,’ adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway production.” Coyle also felt that some tonal changes did not work, an assessment of the film’s choices rather than a settled measure of how every viewer will respond. Where can I watch The Color Purple?
Availability depends on your country and can change. Warner Bros. announced that the film began streaming on Max on February 16, 2024; that date records a past launch, not a guarantee that it is currently available there. See Warner Bros.’ announcement.
An Amazon Prime Video New Zealand listing shows UHD rental and purchase options, but it does not establish availability elsewhere or confirm current options in other countries. Check the New Zealand listing, or search the storefront for your own country and verify whether the film is included with a subscription, available to rent, or available to buy. Apple TV also has a film catalog page; its presence does not by itself confirm the same viewing option in every region. View Apple TV’s catalog entry.
