In May 2025, 404 Media reported that starwarsweb.net—a site made to look like a Star Wars fan page—was used by the CIA as a covert communications channel for informants abroad. Independent researcher Ciro Santilli brought the site to attention through open-source research. The public account places it within a wider network of covert websites, but does not establish that this particular domain caused any source’s death.

What was starwarsweb.net?

According to 404 Media’s May 26, 2025 report, starwarsweb.net was a covert CIA communications tool disguised as a fan site. It was not simply a franchise page that happened to attract attention: the site’s Star Wars presentation served as cover for communications with informants in other countries. The account was based on independent researcher Ciro Santilli’s open-source work. 404 Media’s report describes the operation.

What did the cover site look like?

404 Media described a page from around 2010 featuring Yoda and C-3PO imagery, the line “Like these games you will,” references to Star Wars Battlefront 2, The Force Unleashed II and The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, and a LEGO Star Wars advertisement. These were elements of the site’s cover, not evidence that the page was an official franchise destination. Nerdist also described an archived view with Clone Wars-era Yoda imagery, consistent with a page from around that period. The exact launch and shutdown dates have not been established. Nerdist’s follow-up discusses the archived appearance.

How was the site discovered?

Santilli identified the Star Wars site through open-source research, according to 404 Media. It was one site in a larger covert communications network, rather than the entire operation. GameSpot’s account of reporting on that network describes technical patterns—including sequential IP addresses and related sites discoverable through basic DNS lookups—that helped researchers map connections. Those reported network-wide weaknesses do not prove that starwarsweb.net had every same flaw. GameSpot’s coverage summarizes the network context.

How did fake websites serve as communications channels?

The key point in the reporting is that the site’s ordinary-looking public face concealed its covert role: it was used to communicate with informants abroad. The available accounts do not provide enough verified operational detail to explain precisely how an informant used this particular page, what information passed through it, or how its technical setup worked. It would therefore be misleading to invent a step-by-step account of the system from the site’s appearance alone.

How does the site relate to reported source losses?

Reporting connects the broader network of covert websites to compromised CIA informants and source deaths. GameSpot places the network in the context of a 2022 Reuters investigation into exposed communications channels in Iran and compromised sources. Nerdist also describes the wider story alongside CIA source losses in China around 2010–2012. These accounts concern the larger network; they do not establish that starwarsweb.net directly caused a particular person’s death or trace an individual loss to this domain. Reuters’ 2022 investigation examined communications channels in Iran.

What is known—and what remains unconfirmed?

The public record described here is reporting and open-source documentation, not a disclosed official CIA account of this domain. The sources do not include a CIA statement or a declassified operational record specifically confirming starwarsweb.net’s role. Nor do they settle the exact operating dates, the full technical failure behind the wider network’s exposure, or the relative roles of human and communications-system failures. CIA records are often not immediately public; the National Archives explains the context for agency records and their eventual availability. The National Archives’ CIA records guide provides that records context.
