The Booker Prize Foundation is launching an annual award for fiction for children aged eight to 12, with its first winner due to be announced on 2 February 2027. Children will help choose the winning book: three UK-based child judges will join the adult panel after it selects an eight-book shortlist.
What the Children’s Booker Prize recognises
The prize is for what its judges consider the best eligible contemporary fiction for readers aged eight to 12. It is not an award for all children’s literature: the work must be fiction and meet the publication and language rules.
Authors may be of any nationality. Eligible books may be originally written in English or translated into English, but they must be published in the UK and/or Ireland during the relevant eligibility period. The period for the inaugural 2027 award ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. The Foundation’s prize overview sets out the remit; its entry page gives the publisher rules and dates.
How books are entered
Publishers submit books for consideration. Authors, translators, illustrators and agents cannot enter directly. Submissions for the 2027 prize are closed.

Who chooses the shortlist and winner
For the first award, three adult judges select eight books for the shortlist. The panel is chaired by children’s author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce, alongside actor, writer and comedian Lolly Adefope and bookseller Sanchita Basu De Sarkar.
Three child judges, aged eight to 12 and resident in the UK, join the adult judges to choose the winner. The arrangement gives children a direct role in the final decision, while the adult panel determines which books reach that decision. The Foundation’s 2027 prize-year page describes the judging process and schedule.

Prize money and how it is shared
The Booker Prize Foundation says each shortlisted author receives £2,500 and the winning book receives £50,000. The division of the award depends on the kind of book:
- If a translated book wins, its author and translator share the prize equally.
- If a graphic novel wins, its author and illustrator share the prize equally.
- For an illustrated book, the Foundation decides how the prize is divided between author and illustrator; the split may be 50:50 or 75:25.
Why the Foundation is launching the prize
The AKO Foundation is the founding partner and principal funder. The Booker Prize Foundation describes the award as part of a wider effort to engage young readers and grow future audiences for books. Its chief executive, Gaby Wood, said: “This new prize is underpinned by a social mission: to create future generations of lifelong readers.”
